Roof Truss Evaluation & Repair Recommendations
Bennett Residence
2220 Alicia Lane
Atlantic Beach, Florida 32233
Alta Engineering Company was requested to evaluate the altered wood roof truss located east of the pantry attic access scuttle of the subject home in Atlantic Beach,
Florida. The purpose of our evaluation was to provide guidance for the repair of the
truss.
The subject truss is the 6th hip truss from the west roof edge jack trusses. A diagonal web
member was apparently removed from the subject truss to allow for installation of the
air handling unit (AHU) mounted in the attic.
Repair of the truss is required and should be completed as follows:
1. Remove the remaining portions of the cut web member from their
connection to the truss press plates.
2. Install a new diagonal web member to snugly fit in place of the removed web member. The new truss chord shall be a kind size #2 SYP wood board.
3. Install new 3/4-inch thick CDX plywood gussets to join the replaced web
members to the existing top and bottom chords.
a. Gussets shall be provided on both sides of the truss where connected
to the top chord; however, only one gusset can be installed at the
connection to the bottom chord due to the spacial constraint imposed
by the AHU on its east side.

b. The (2) top gussets shall be lap onto all joined members a minimum of 18-inches and have (8) #10 screws into each member.
c. The single bottom gusset shall be lap onto all joined members a
minimum of 24-inches and have (16) #10 screws into each member.
Take care to space screws >3/4-inches from the edge of the board and
a minimum of 2-inches apart.
4. In addition to replacing the removed truss web, also add ¾-inch thick CDX
plywood gussets to each side of the quadruple vertical web members just
south of the AHU. The gusset should be horizontally sized to match the width
of the stacked webs and vertically sized 24-inches. Install (8) #10 screws to
each web member.
We appreciate the opportunity to provide our professional services. Please contact us if there are any questions concerning this report.
