98-36 v . . • • = ,--- • CITY OF v > asctic i e�acl - Gvuda 3Riiarlutiun No. 98- 36 WHEREAS, a woman was attacked while walking on Atlantic Beach the morning of October 6, 1998; and WHEREAS, the suspect physically assaulted and robbed the woman, and then attempted to drag her into a more secluded location; and WHEREAS,Robert D. Shimp observed the altercation taking place between the victim and suspect and did intervene and stop the assault, thus protecting the victim from any further harm; and WHEREAS, Robert D. Shimp did detain the suspect against the suspect's will, and did turn the suspect over to the responding police officers at the scene; and WHEREAS, Robert D. Shimp did accept considerable personal risk in looking after the safety and well being of a stranger who was being victimized on the beach, in addition to forcibly • detaining a robbery suspect. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the City Commission of Atlantic Beach, Florida, wishes to express its sincere appreciation to Robert D. Shimp for this selfless act of heroism which served to protect an innocent victim, incarcerate a robbery suspect, and prevent further criminal activity on the part of the suspect. The citizens of Atlantic Beach and the surrounding communities have benefitted from Mr. Shimp's decision to "get involved", and his willingness to take the necessary action to protect a stranger being victimized on the beach. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution of recognition and appreciation be spread upon the official minutes of the City of Atlantic Beach and a certified copy hereof be furnished to Robert D.
