CITY OF 'tr auti6 Vead - 96n da • \ esatution No. 97-17 A TWENTY-ONE DAY SALUTE TO THE FLAG of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WHEREAS, the Flag of the United States of America is the most widely recognized emblem in history and has had more written of it in prose, poetry, song and music and law than any other; and WHEREAS, on June 14, 1777 the Founding Fathers adopted America's first symbol of a"flag with 13 stripes, alternate red and white with white stars in a blue field representing a new constellation;" and WHEREAS, June 14 is annually celebrated as"Flag Day" as the birthday of this enduring emblem; and WHEREAS, on July 4, 1776 the Continental Congress declared the United States to be a Free and Independent Nation to secure the blessings of Equality, Justice, Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness; and WHEREAS, to this ideal Americans have pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor ever after, and the Fourth of July is therefore celebrated as Independence Day; and WHEREAS, the twenty-one days beginning June 14 and ending July 4 provide all citizens and places of business an opportunity to recognize these two historic events and the sacrifices made for the freedoms we now enjoy by displaying and flying the Flag of the United States of America for the twenty-one days. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the Atlantic Beach City Commission endorses the Twenty- one day Salute to the Flag and urges all Atlantic Beach citizens and businesses to proudly display and fly the Flag of the United States of America during this twenty-one day period.
