97-36 v • • CITY OF i&ti arizzturn No. 97-36 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH RECOGNIZING MORT HANSON SEA TURTLE PATROL COORDINATOR, DUVAL COUNTY WHEREAS, for 18 years Mort Hanson has generously contributed his time and effort in patrolling the oceanfront of the Mayport Naval Station, Hanna Park, and the three beaches Communities for the purpose of monitoring and protecting Sea Turtles and their nests; and WHEREAS, Sea Turtle nesting begins in April and extends through August, and hatchlings emerge from July until November 1st. During the nesting time Mort Hanson patrols the beach two times per day, in the early morning hours and in the evening. He inspects existing nests and tries to find any new nests. At times it is necessary to be on the beach on other occasions to aid a nesting sea turtle or a hatchling release. He places protective fencing around the nests, thus protecting them from harm; and WHEREAS, in his capacity as Sea Turtle Patrol Coordinator Mort Hanson works hand in hand with the Department of Environmental Protection. Injured and dead turtles are found and an effort is made to discover the cause of injury or death for educational purposes, enhanced knowledge, and understanding of the harmful elements that affect the Sea Turtle. Injured turtles are taken to Marineland, nursed back to health, and released back into the environment. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Atlantic Beach City Commission wishes to recognize the outstanding service and contributions of Mort Hanson for the care and preservation of the Sea Turtle, which contributes to the quality of life in Atlantic Beach.
