RESOLUTION NO. 95-10
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH,
FLORIDA, AFFIRMING THE NEED FOR
CONTINUANCE OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY
CORPS OF ENGINEERS CONTRACT WITH DUVAL
COUNTY, FLORIDA TO PERIODICALLY RENOURISH
THE SANDY BEACHES OF DUVAL COUNTY.
WHEREAS the United States Army Corps of Engineers entered into a contract July 7,
1994,with Duval County to periodically renourish with sand the beaches of Duval County,and
WHEREAS certain reductions in the proposed United States budget would cut funding of
renourishment duties of the United States Army Corps of Engineers in Florida,and
WHEREAS the necessity for renourishment of sand on certain Duval County beaches is
wholly generated by the presence and requirement of the St. Johns River jetties for general
navigation,the Port of Jacksonville, Florida,and United States Naval Station Mayport,and
WHEREAS resultant demonstrated erosion south of the St. Johns River will destroy Duval
County beaches within twelve to fifteen years, and
WHEREAS the valuable Port of Jacksonville, maintained as a necessity by State and
Federal interests, is unlikely to be abandoned in the foreseeable future.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH,as follows:
Section 1. Funds required for continuation of the aforesaid renourishment contract be
reinstituted into the United States budget,
Section 2. Renourishment of the sandy beaches of Duval County continue
periodically as outlined in the aforesaid contract at least until contract termination in 2028
Adopted by the City Commission this 13th day of March 1995.
