94-16 v RESOLUTION NO. 94-16 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH, FLORIDA, IN SUPPORT OF THE PRESERVATION AND RENOVATION OF THE ORIGINAL DUNCAN U. FLETCHER HIGH SCHOOL (#63). WHEREAS, the Fletcher High School (#63) building has, since 1937, housed most of the secondary educational facilities for the Beaches and has, in many instances, served three generations of Beaches residents in their pursuit of quality education; and WHEREAS, this building is the most outstanding landmark at the Beaches being almost equidistant between the farthest communities which it served: Mayport and Ponte Vedra; and WHEREAS, this building is a monument to the courage and endurance of our countrymen who, barely removed from the depths of the depression, chose to build an edifice the beauty of which is found in the linear clarity of its brickwork; its dignity,in the lack of pretentious ornament; and finally its nobility,in its straight forward composition; and WHEREAS, the demolition or degradation of this noble structure would rob present and future generations of their architectural, educational, and cultural heritage. NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Commission of the City of Atlantic Beach: Section 1. That the City of Atlantic Beach petitions the Duval County School Board to preserve DUNCAN U. FLETCHER HIGH SCHOOL (#63). Section 2. That the City of Atlantic Beach most sincerely asks that the Duval County School System renovate DUNCAN U. FLETCHER HIGH SCHOOL(#63)and find an educational function for it as befits its size, construction, history and dignity. Section 3.
