Good morning,
1) Thank you for inviting me to come today to share more about our exciting project for
Atlantic Beach.
I’m Bob Burch representing the Beaches Train Club requesting financial support for our Club’s
permanent Exhibit at the Adele Grage Cultural Center. Our Exhibit will depict Henry Flagler’s
railway and his continental hotel or as described in the Florida Times Union recently “A grand
hotel in the wild of Atlantic beach.”
I grew up in Arlington before buying a house in Atlantic Beach about 20 years ago. When I was
growing up in Arlington, model trains were popular, and I developed an early fondness for them.
As I got older, I was fascinated to learn that Arlington once had a train run through the area.
2) After retiring from teaching about 10 years ago, I became an active member of the Beaches
Museum and I was blown away to learn, a train used to run to our Beaches all the way to
Mayport. I was even more surprised to learn its tracks were just a few blocks away from my
house and the depot and Continental Hotel were just down the road a couple blocks from
where you are sitting and a stone throw from Adele Grage.
I’m still quite active at the Beaches Museum and almost every Sunday afternoon, I am a Docent
educating and sharing with both visitors and residents about the history of our trains at the
Beaches and the impact they had on the development of our communities. Our train club
wanted to bring that knowledge and understanding of the historic significance of our area to
our own Atlantic Beach.
3) Our train club has built a scale model of the 1900 Atlantic Beach Depot which will be
permanently located at Adele Grage along with a model of the 1900 steam engine passenger
train that ran across our beaches stopping at the depot and bringing passengers to the
Continental Hotel. This exhibit at Atlantic Beach will give both young and old, new and longtime
residents in Atlantic Beach, a sense of place knowing the fascinating early history of our area.
The Beaches Kiwanis Club has provided $750 to the project to fund the plexiglass cover to
protect the exhibit.
4) Funding is being requested to cover the cost of a 72”x40” Information Panel above the
exhibit. It will include information about the early 1900’s of Atlantic Beach as well as describe
the exhibit. Katie Rider with MorganMackenzie designs estimates the design cost of $400-$600
and the Panel material cost is $350 for a total of $750-$950.

5) The information panel will have four sections depicting and describing
1. The early History of Atlantic Beach
2. Flagler’s somewhat unusual Florida East Coast Railway Depot built specifically for and
attached to the Continental Hotel
6)
3. Flagler’s Continental Hotel which will later become the Atlantic Beach Hotel
4. Manhattan Beach, the first northeast Florida beach for Black residents on oceanfront
property made available by Henry Flagler
7) Additional funding is requested for catering three scheduled events at Adele Grage to
introduce and share information with the community about the exhibit. Each is estimated to be
$250.
There will be an opening reception on October 6th/7th
We will celebrate Christmas at the Continental on November 20/December 1st
February will be the Opening of a Manhattan Beach pop-up during February’s Black
History Month
Our total request from this committee is $1500 - $1700
Thank you for allowing me this time.

First Coast Comedy is a local family-owned
small business, serving the Atlantic Beach
Community and owned by Atlantic Beach
residents. In multiple ways, an investment
into First Coast Comedy's services is an
investment back into Atlantic Beach.
Why our organization?Agenda Item #3.Q.22 Aug 2023Page 17 of 27
Improv education helps to develop valuable life skills.
These courses will foster positive growth for the
young people who participate in them, resulting in an
increase in the number of adolescents and teens in
our community who possess invaluable teamwork and
leadership abilities. The free show, along with these
courses, will also provide AB youth positive outlets for
their creative and social energies.
How will this enrich our city?Agenda Item #3.Q.22 Aug 2023Page 18 of 27

Improvisation encourages active
listening, clear expression, and
effective verbal communication. A
study by Beghetto and Kaufman (2010)
found that improv activities improved
communication skills among
participants, leading to better
articulation of ideas and increased
comfort with public speaking.

Participating in improv fosters self-
confidence as children learn to think on
their feet and express themselves in
various situations. A study by Spolin
(1963) found that improv activities
helped children develop a sense of
self-assuredness and reduced anxiety
in social interactions.
