A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH
REQUESTING THE STATE OF FLORIDA TO CONTINUE
OPERATING AND MAINTAINING THE ST. JOHNS RIVER FERRY
(AKA THE MAYPORT FERRY) .
WHEREAS, the St. Johns River Ferry has operated since October 1950
as the only method of transportation across the mouth of the river to
meet the needs and convenience of the public, industry, and the military
and should be considered the same as any other bridge in the
Jacksonville area; and
WHEREAS, the Ferry Service is located approximately eight miles
down the river from the Broward Bridge, and such loss of service would
require a driver to experience a twenty-eight mile trip to arrive across
the river from the point of ferry service if using the Broward Bridge;
and
WHEREAS, that portion of State Road A-1-A in Nassau, Duval, and St.
Johns Counties has been designated as Florida's First Coast Highway and
is important to the economic welfare of ocean-side municipalities from
Fernandina to St. Augustine; and
WHEREAS, until the completion of the Wonderwood Road to connect
Atlantic Beach and Mayport to State Road 9A and other parts of the
Jacksonville Expressway system, there will continue to be a need for
traffic relief given by the ferry and State Road A-1-A.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF ATLANTIC BEACH as follows:
Section 1. The State of Florida be and it is hereby requested
to continue operating the Mayport Ferry to enable travelers to continue
using A-1-A from Mayport to the other side of the mouth of the St. Johns
River.
Section 2. The City Clerk is hereby requested to furnish a copy
of this resolution to the appropriate State and Federal officials.
