RESOLUTION NUMBER 89-19
A RESOLUTION URGING A FEASIBILITY STUDY OF THE
CONVERSION OF THE CASA MARINA BUILDING INTO A
PERFORMING AND VISUAL ARTS CENTER
WHEREAS, THE Beaches community is a large , rapidly growing area
of many thousands of permanent residents in the cities of
ilayport , Atlantic Beach , Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach,
Nayport Naval Station , the San Pablo area and northeastern St .
Johns County in addition to the annual influx of tourists: and
WHEREAS , the community wants more cultural events to be held
in the Beaches area as exemplified in the success of a number
of performing and visual arts organizations which have a long
history at the beach ; and
WHEREAS, arts groups such. as Players By The Sea , the Beaches
Arts Center, the Beaches Fine Arts Guild, Y-BAG, several dance
groups and numerous crafts groups such as Sandycrafters and
the Basket Weavers Guild have no permanent home; and
WHEREAS, a performing and visual arts center would offer a
continuous program of theatrical events and arts and crafts
exhibits, it would also fulfill its role in art education by
offering classes for all age groups; and
WHEREAS, a facility of this type would have a favorable economic
impact on the area by attracting more organizations to conduct
meetings and events at the Beaches ; and
WHEREAS, THE Casa Marina building has unique architectural and
historical significance; and
WHEREAS, THE Casa Marina is located on the ocean at the north
end of the proposed boardwalk of the Redevelopment Area, and
WHEREAS, the best use of this building should be of benefit
to the public;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY the City Commission
of the City of Atlantic Beach , Florida
SECTION 1 . That we, the members of the City Commission
of Atlantic Beach , Florida, strongly urge the
City of Jacksonville Beach, with the support of the other
municipalities, to do a "feasibility study of the conversion
of the Casa Marina building into a performing and visual arts
center.
SECTION 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
