A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THAT THE JACKSONVILLE
TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY, THE CITY OF JACKSONVILLE,
FLORIDA, THE DEFENSE DEPARTMENT OF THE UNITED
STATES TO PARTICIPATE IN PLANNING AND CONSTRUCTION
OF THE MAYPORT EXPRESSWAY BETWEEN THE MAYPORT
NAVAL STATION AND THE DAMES POINT BRIDGE.
WHEREAS, the Mayport Naval Station is one of the most strategic and
important naval installations on the eastern borders of the United States and is continuing
to expand; and
WHEREAS, the Mayport Naval Station is surrounded on three sides by water,
with Mayport Road as the only land access; and
WHEREAS, the Mayport Naval Station and the area surrounding it is being
developed so rapidly that traffic has reached near capacity; and
WHEREAS, Mayport Road Via Atlantic Boulevard is the major access to the
Mayport Naval Station and for national security reasons, as well as from a transportation
viewpoint, an alternate access to the Naval Station is well justified; and
WHEREAS, the agency primarily responsible for the planning and engineering
of the Mayport Expressway should plan and develop the route that would maximize the use
of existing rights-of-way and have the least detrimental impact, NOW THEREFORE, BE
IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF ATLANTIC BEACH, FLORIDA:
That the Jacksonville Transportation Authority is requested to assume the
primary responsibility in planning and engineering for the Mayport Expressway between
the Mayport Naval Station and the Arlington area of the City of Jacksonville and the
other governmental agencies mentioned in this Resolution cooperate in this endeavor.
