COMMENTARY REGARDING USE OF INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION TABLES
Questions regarding the use and reading of the span tables to arrive at the appropriate span for the desired design load pressure has been raised. This
commentary has been issued to clarify the correct method on how to use the tables with the appropriate design loads and their corresponding
maximum spans.
The first step is to determine the design wind speed and the Exposure. Find the appropriate table for the panel type, type of structure (open, enclosed,
etc.), and Exposure.
1.Once the table is selected, locate the design wind speed. The row with wind speed, find the maximum deflection limit allowed by the code for the
structure being designed. The span under the selected deflection limit is the maximum allowable span. 2. The term “allowable” in the heading
“MAX. ALLOWABLE SPAN” is not related to design method. It’s meaning is just plan Webster English Dictionary meaning. It does not relate to
Strength or Allowable Design methodology. The 0.6 reduction factor to convert Ultimate to Allowable is not used for Spans. The span figures in the
tables never gets modified.
3.The term NET ULTIMATE LOAD in the tables are the design loads (pressures) that are derived from ASCE 7 and/or FBC. The term NET is the
combination of all the loads from the controlling load combination from ASCE 7/FBC. In the calculations for patio structures, the dead load for the
panels is assumed minimal. The load combination that usually controls is dead load plus wind load. But the design professional should verify for
their particular structure design.
4.If the designer is using Allowable Strength Design in their overall design of the structure and wishes to get the Allowable Loads for the design of
other components in their structure, this note is just a reminder to multiply the load (PSF) in the NET ULTIMATE LOAD column by 0.6 to convert
the load to allowable stress design so that the designer can calculated the allowable loads imposed on the panels to design other elements such as
foundations, connections, MWFRS, and attachments to existing host structures.
