As the tree grows and increases in mass the lean will get worse and the hollow will not help to structurally support that continue additions to mass The hollow located at the base of the trunk started at the wound at the top of this trunk . an old pruning cut decayed away while CODIT was taking place. The decay has now made its way to the base of the tree traveling 8” – 10” down the trunk. Risk rating matrix. Risk Categorization Target number The main concern is this defect in the phot0. From a past wound of some kind the tree is attempting to heal through CODIT however due to the shape and size of the defect , CODIT is actually making the wound larger. As the lead above this defect continues to grow , mass will be added thus the load on the defect will increase. This wound acts as an “open face cut “ directing the future failure of this limb into the home owners ( Chris ) property. The remaining parts of the tree appear to be structurally fine. The whole tree does not need to be condemned however this limb should be removed as soon as possible to alleviate the risk of a future failure Pics below show the defect about half way up the trunk to the lead above. You can see the size of the branch and where the lead will fall. Besides removing the limb there is no other way to mitigate branch from failing. No cabling or pruning will save the large lead. Removal of lead is recommended
