Approximately 25” to 30” D.B.H. Laurel oak (Quercus laurifolia) – this tree has heart rot decay and is hollow at the root buttress, confirmed with a Level 2 assessment using a rubber mallet as a tool to detect decay. The extent of decay extends from the root buttress up to the area of codominance. There is response wood and included bark present at the codominant unions, which is indicative of union failure and decay. This tree has approximately 40% crown loss and major dead wood is visible in the crown. The root system has been encroaching the footer of the home, the n eighbor’s screened enclosure and the pool in the backyard which has resulted in approximately 50% root loss over the last several years. This tree is in decline. Targets in the fall zone of this tree are this home, the neighboring home, and screened enclosure of both homes. Using the TRAQ matrix, this tree has a HIGH overall risk rating. The only mitigation option would be to prune the dead wood from the canopy and treat the tree with a growth regulator. However, the overall risk rating would still be HIGH due to the decay in the trunk and at the codominant union. There are no mitigation options available to mitigate this tree below moderate other than removal.
