On May 26,2026,John Gault requested my assessment of a sweet gum located in his backyard.This sweet gum
has a diameter at breast height of 27 inches,a crown spread of 40 feet,and a height of 65 feet.Unfortunately,last
year a severe windstorm passed through and damaged the top of this tree.Photographs display an open wound,
and even after a year,little reaction wood has been observed.Consequently,this situation may develop into a
more significant issue in the future,particularly given that today was a very windy day with winds reaching 17
miles per hour and gusting up to 25 miles per hour.The remaining section of the top was observed to pivot in the
wind,indicating compromised structural integrity.Regrettably,it is only a matter of time before this section fails
and crashes onto the neighbor's shed.I do not foresee a viable future for this tree.If we merely mitigate the risk,
residual risk will remain,as it will only rot behind the last cut.Therefore,I recommend the removal of the tree,as
it poses a high risk.
