AGENDA ITEM: Boat parking on residential lots (at the request of Commissioner Waters)

BACKGROUND: As part of the major re-write of Chapter 24, which was finally adopted in
November of 2001, regulations were included to prohibit boats from being parked on a residential lot
any closer than 15-feet from the front property line or any street side property line. Only one boat
~. could be parked on a 5000 square foot or less lot, and a 10,000 square foot lot was required for a
second boat. This provision was immediately amended to make the 15-foot setback restriction apply
only to the front property line. (These same provisions also apply to Recreational Vehicles and any
type of trailer.)
The issue of boat parking was one of the more contentious issues considered as part of the Chapter
24 re-write. This issue was debated over many months of meetings and workshops. The draft
'"~ regulations, which initially proposed no boat or RV parking within front or side yards, were revised
several times, and the provisions adopted were generally considered to be a compromise position.
The adopted boat and RV parking regulations addressing permitted location on a lot are restated as

Sec. 24-163. Storage and Parking of Commercial Vehicles and Recreational Vehicles and

Equipment and repair of vehicles in Residential Zoning Districts.
(b) Recreational Vehicles stored or parked on any residential Lot shall be subject to the following
provisions.
(1) Not more than one (1) Recreational Vehicle, boat or boat trailer, or other type of trailer shall
be stored or parked on any residential Lot which is 5000 square feet in Lot Area or less.
Minimum Lot Area of 10,000 square feet is required for storage or parking of any second
Recreational Vehicle, boat or boat trailer, or other type of trailer.
~. (2) Recreational Vehicles, boats or boat trailers, or other type of trailer shall not be parked or
stored closer than fifteen (15) feet from the Front Lot Line.
BUDGET: No budget issues.
