Item 3A ~'I_~ Ta Jim Hanson, City Manager From: David E. Thompson, Chief of Police/DPS CC: Dates 2/28/2007 "~ Re: Drug Charges 2006 AGENDA ITEM # 3A MARCH 12, 2007 At the last City Commission Meeting, Commissioner Simmons asked for a more detailed breakdown of the types of drug charges discussed in the Annual Report. I am providing some additional details for her review. I also want to point out that many drug charges are linked to other forms of criminal misconduct, and multiple drug charges for one individual are common. This means that we may arrest a single individual for reckless driving, and he may be charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and possession of cocaine. The most common add-on charge is possession of drug paraphernalia. 2006 Drug Related Charges Possession of Paraphernalia 158 Possession of Marijuana 176 Possession of Cocaine 64 Possession of Controlled Substance without Prescription 49 Valium, Ecstasy, Opiates, Barbiturates, Xanax, OxyContin, etc. Sale of Cocaine 16 Sale of Marijuana 10 DUI Drugs 15 Other Related Offenses include: Burglary, Burglary to Vehicles, Domestic Violence, Revoked Licenses Prostitution, Aggravated Assault, Fights, Multiple Traffic Offenses, DUI 1 AGEI3DA ITEM #3A MARCH 12, 2007 ..~ The most disturbing trend is the increase in prescription drug abuse as noted above. A few years ago, prescription drug abuse was relatively rare when compared to cocaine and marijuana. We have seen a dramatic increase in the abuse of prescription drugs.
