10-23-07MINUTES CULTURAL ARTS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE (CARAC) CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH Tuesday, October 23, 2007 Adele Grage Cultural Center 7:00 P.M. Present: Chair Laurie Melancon, ,Avery Goetz, John Longbottom, Kelly Manuel, Ingrid McCawley, Director Tim Johnson, Karen Kempf (recording). Absent: Mark Howard, Gary Becka, Lori Gaglione, Jolyn Johnson. Guest: Lisa Goodrich, President Beaches Fine Arts Series 1. Call to Order -Chair Laurie Melancon called the meeting to order at ?:15. 2. Minutes Approval (i) The committee reviewed the September 25, 2007 Minutes with one correction. Kelly moved and John seconded the motion to approve. The committee unanimously approved the minutes. 3. New Business (i) Beaches Fine Arts presentation by Lisa Goodrich. (a) Ms. Goodrich gave each of the committee a packet of information about the Beaches Fine Arts Series, now in its 35~' season. She reported that many of the participants are Atlantic Beach residents and that they serve more than 35 schools with their outreach programs. Programs are offered to the public without cost, and the organization is supported by inkind donations and underwriting by individuals and organizations. She requested $5000 from the Cultural Arts and Recreational Advisory Committee to help support the program. After discussion and a review of the committee budget, Kelly moved, and Ingrid seconded, that the CARAC contribute $500 to support the Beaches Fine Art Series; and that CARAC will support Ms. Goodrich in requesting additional funding for the Series from the City Commissioners. The motion carried. 4. Events and Program Updates (i) Fan Run (a) Tim reported that he has not heard from Dawn. Timmy will try and contact her before the next meeting. (ii) Tour de Parks (a) Timmy will email Alicia about the bike tour in the spring and see if she can coordinate. The committee would like to invite her to the next meeting. 1 (iii) Songwriters (a) John presented a report to the committee. He reported that at the October concert, 18 people performed and 56 attended the event. (iv) Acoustic Night (a} Acoustic Night had its last performance for 2007 on October. Despite the weather, 85 people attended with 18 performers. Both events are drawing more young people and the highlight was two young performers from St. Augustine. (v) CARAC brochure & calendar (a} The brochure can be printed this fall for the 2008 calendar of events. Kelly will finalize the text, dates, and events with Tim. (b) Lacking Teen Council events and descriptions, they can be listed as "to be announced: ' (vi) Holiday Sing-Along (a) The committee is over-budget with the AV equipment and Santa suit needed for the event. Laurie offered her projector and 3-tier cart. Lori has a screen and karaoke machine. The committee may not have to rent equipment if all the pieces work together. (vii) Teen Conncil (a) November 4 is the Eastern Surf Association and Teen Council Surf Contest. The Teen Council will provide trophies, food, t- shirts and a band (music) for the event at Hanna Park. Mitch, owner of Sunrise Surf Shop will handle the registration as part of the ESA North Florida District event. Tim asked Avery to work with Karen for orders and invoicing of items. 5. Other Agenda Items (i) Porte Vedra Caltnral Center (a) The CARAC should talk with Potrte Vedra and invite Sandy Wilson to a meeting to discuss possibilities such as a "super art" application, events and artists that can happen at both locations, consecutively or together.
