05-14-97BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MINUTES Meeting of May 14,.1997 The regular meeting of the Committee was held on Wednesday, May 14, in the Conference Room of City Hall. Present were: Chairperson June Morris, Pamela Fitzwilliams, Mimi Ames, Gloria Vaughn, Barbara Hopson, Ron Schiebler, City Gardener, and Carl Walker, Coordinator. The meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM and a motion made by Barbara Hopson to approve the minutes of the last meeting as read. Mimi Ames seconded and the motion passed. Barbara Hopson reported on the upcoming "Spring Bright Spots Tour", advising that all details had been finalized and that everything was on schedule. Carl distributed to the members a copy of the tour map and description of the yards chosen. The local press has given the event good. coverage, including a listing of the addresses which was in today's Beaches Lea- der. Flyers have previously been posted and/or distributed through the A. B. Elementary school. Carl advised that he left a supply of the maps at the reception desk in City Hall for anyone wanting to pick up a copy early. June reported, in the absence of Jane Vincent, that a plan- ning meeting will be held by residents interested in enhan- cing the 11th Street beach access. The meeting is set for Sunday, May 18, at 3 PM and will be held in the Commission Chambers. Flyers have been distributed to area residents and a large turnout is expected. Results of the meeting will be announced at the next regular committee meeting. Carl added that he had been contacted by a group at 13th St. who are interested in refurbishing their access. They, too, are having a meeting on May 18, at a resident's home. Carl has also spoken to a representative of the 12th St. access who is in hopes of beginning their refurbishing within the next few weeks. Gloria mentioned that she had spoken with a man at the re- cent "Earth Day Celebration" who is very familiar with native plants to be used at beach locations. His name is Jim Loper and Gloria will obtain his address and phone number. Ron reported on past and current landscaping projects. He advised that all of the sign locations have been replanted with spring/summer annuals and all. seem to be doing well. The mailbox location is also completed as well as the plan- tings at the Public Safety building, Fublic Works, and the two beds at the entrance to City Hall. The pindo palms on BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES, MAY 14, 1997 Sailfish Drive, transplanted from the Atlantic Blvd. medians, are doing well. All work at the Ahern Street location is also complete, including the resodding of the grassed areas. Ron also reported that a local nursery, "Fruit 'N Nuts" re- cently donated several large ligustrums to the city, as well as 3 small trees. The ligustrum has been planted in front of the fence near the tennis courts at Russell Park and the trees have been installed on Donner Park property. June brought up that, for the past two years, the Committee has voted to not have a regular July meeting due to poor attendance because of peak vacation time. After a brief dis- cussion, it was agreed to decide on this issue at the June meeting. June also led a discussion on forthcoming committee events, i.e., the "Fall Bright Spots Tour" and the holiday luminaria sale. Barbara H. agreed to serve on the tour committee and Gloria volunteered to help with that undertaking also. The preparations for the luminaria sale will be discussed at future meetings. Carl reminded members that the order for the luminaria must be placed with RAP in early September. Carl reported that, beginning with the new fiscal year bud- get effective October 1, monies collected through the Tree Fund, established by the Tree Preservation Ordinance, will be deposited into the Beautification account. These will be utilized for the planting of trees on City property. June Morris led the discussion on the election of committee officers, and Barbara Hopson agreed to serve as Vice-Chair for the forthcoming year ('97-'9$). Mimi Ames made a motion to elect June Morris and Barbara Hopsan as Chairperson and Vice Chairperson, respectively. Gloria seconded and the motion unanimously passed.
