All residents on the tour have accepted and the map and the accompanying descriptive write-up are competed. She will handle the dis- tribution of this material in front of City Hall at the hours shown in the press releases and on the flyers. Carl added that he had visited all the chosen locations in order that he could prepare the map. He complimented the members of the sub-committee for their selections which in- clude a wide variety of yard types and sizes. June led the discussion on the luminaria event. Volunteers from the Committee agreed to handle "shifts" of 1 hour each at both the City Tree Lighting and the fallowing Saturday in Russell Park. A schedule was prepared and Carl will remind, by memo, the people involved a few days prior to the events. He is also working on a flyer which can be used to solicit orders from residents. On the subject of beach access/street end improvements, Jane Vincent reported that the 11th Street project was finished. Committee members who have visited the locations complimented the work which has been done. Barbara Bonner, on behalf of the residents and of the Committee, thanked Jane for all of her time and efforts spent. Gloria advised that 13th Street was also finished and that all of the plantings with the except of two or three had sur- vived the recent poor weather. Carl, in the absence of Ron Schiebler who was ill and could not make the meeting, brought the group up to date on recent and planned landscaping efforts, including information about the planting of pansies for the fall/winter season in all of the flowering bed locations. BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MTG. MINUTES, NOVEMBER 12, 1997 June distributed a new listing of membership which includes name, address, and phone number of all of the current, active members of the group. Carl reminded the committee that same sort of "Arbor Day" ob- servation must be held in 1998 in order to retain our "Tree City, USA" status. A discussion followed as to whether or not the committee should sponsor a tree sale. Factors such as possible weather conditions and the availability of nur- series was considered and it was agreed that type of event would not take place. Instead, the emphasis will be on edu- cation, with a program at Atlantic Beach Elementary School. Barbara Hopson agreed to organize such a program and will discuss this with the school principle. Carl said he and Ron will assist. Barbara will update the committee on ten- tative plans at the next meeting. Carl brought the group up to date an the status of the pro- posed City Greenhouse. After discussion, Barbara Hopson made a motion that the Beautification Committee was not in favor of the proposed greenhouse due to its expense, intended usage, and the lack of proper staffing. Jane Vincent se- conded and the motion unanimously passed. Discussion followed on possible alternatives to the greenhouse and it was sug- gested that a native .plant area be established to be manned by volunteers. This, or other options will be further dis- cussed at future meetings. There was no further business and the meeting adjourned at 8:35 PM. Carl Walker Beautification Coordinator - 2 -
