by Chuck Pendleton to approve the minutes of the last meeting
as read. Gloria Vaughn seconded and the motion passed.
June Marris announced that the Arbor Day tree sale scheduled
for Saturday, March 15, has been cancelled due to lack of
nursery participation. Tn following up with the nurseries,
June had found that their volume of business did not allow
for spare man power to handle the event. It was agreed that
next year, the sale ~aill be scheduled in February.
Carl has alerted the news media of the cancellation and .the
billboard in front of the .Public Safety building adjacent to
City Hall has been changed to reflect that the event has been
cancelled. The program at Atlantic Beach elementary will go,
as scheduled, under the direction of Barbara Hopson. An oak
tree will be planted on Frida,v, March 14, on school grounds
and Ron will be present for the planting.
Brenda Wray reported on the "Spring Bright Spots Tour" which
is scheduled for May 17 & 18. Barbara Hopson has agreed to
serve and the sub-committee has set tentative dates (April 15
and April 30} to meet for planning the event. It will be
patterned after previous ones with approximately 15 locations
involved. Members were asked to look for nominations and let
Brenda, Barbara, or Carl know. The tour will be further dis-
cussed at the April and May meetings.
Ron brought the committee up to date on current and future
landscape projects he is working on. The 33 pindo palms in
the Atlantic Blvd. medians will be removed on Monday, March
17, with the assistance of the contractor for the Greenscape
grant project. The palms will be replanted on the west side
of Sailfish Drive from Atl. Blvd. near the "Breakfast Nook"
to Cavella Lane, the first street north of the former Pic 'N
Save building. Work is scheduled to begin next Monday.
Ron reported that most of the beds currently need replanting
due to the season change. Also, new sod will be laid at the
area on Ahern Street as the former grassed areas were killed
by cinch bugs late last season. Alot of new planting material
has been placed at the "Welcome" sign at the "Fleet Landing"
location. The plantings are from those removed from the
medians on Atl. Blvd. Other plants removed have beers placed
in several areas of City property.
Carl gave a brief overview of the budget process for the
forthcoming '97-'98 fiscal year. He advised that it was his
main concern that enough monies be allocated to ensure that
all landscaped areas could be properly maintained by Ron.
He also expressed that tie thought the budget might be "tight"
this year but asked that the committee let him know of any
projects they might want to include in the beautification
budget proposal.
Jane Vincent reported on her progress on landscaping of the
11th Street beach access. Several suggestions or recommen-
dations were made, and Jane will proceed with the planning
of the project.
Carl brought the Committee up to date on the status of the
Daily Bulletin Board sign on Atlantic Blvd. At this time,
the owners must ask for a variance in order to keep the ad-
dition to the top of the sign or it must be removed. Carl
also reported on the Greenscape planting scheduled for Satur-
day, March 22, at the Atlantic Blvd. medians.
June reminded members that the annual election of Committee
officers would be held at the next regular meeting. The
need for a co-chairperson was discussed.
There was no further business and June adjourned the meeting
at 8:55 PM.
