08-13-97BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE. MINUTES Meeting of August 13, 1997 The regular meeting of the Committee was held on Wednesday, August 13, in the City Hall Conference Room. Present were: Chairperson June Morris, Chuck Pendleton, Barbara Hopson, Gloria Vaughn, Barbara Bonner, Jane Vincent, Mimi Ames, Ron Schiebler, City Gardener, and Carl Walker, Coordinator. The meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM. Barbara Hopson moved to approve the minutes of the last meeting, as written. Chuck Pendelton seconded and the motion passed. In the absence of Jane Vincent, who arrived later in the meeting, June Morris reported on the progress of the 11th St. beach access/street end improvements. The area has been "cleaned up" by volunteer efforts and is greatly improved in appearance. The city has provided a new trash receptacle which is being utilized and reduced the amount of litter. Meetings have been held by the group and a final plan is to be submitted to Carl on Friday, August 15. It will then be submitted to the committee for recommendation or changes. Carl advised that he had met with Gloria Vaughn earlier in the day when she presented the 13th Street plans. He said he was favorably impressed with the organizational efforts of that group and the final design they had submitted. Gloria then introduced the conceptual plans which included a colored landscape drawing and a cost estimate sheet. She emphasized that the finished area would be very low main- tenance. A small portion of the existing grassed area will be kept and the plantings will be native coastal shrubs and ground covering recommended by James Loper of the native plant society. Mr. Loper has previously presented the plans to the 13th St. group and representatives from both 11th and 12th Sts. After further discussion of the design, a motion. was made by Barbara Hopson to accept the plans for 13.th St. improvements, as submitted. Mimi Ames seconded and the motion unanimously carried. Carl briefly reported on the status of improvements and/or refurbishments at other street end/beach access locations, specifically 3rd, 4th, 8th, 12th and 14th Streets. T+ b BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES, AUGUST 13, 1997 Barbara Hopson advised that plans would soon be underway for the "Fall Bright Spots Tour". The exact date of the event has not been set but will probably be in early November so that it will not conflict with October Halloween decorations. Barbara's sub-committee includes Brenda Wray, Mimi Ames, and Gloria Vaughn. June led a discussion on the upcoming luminaries event and sales. Carl advised that there were approximately 350 kits left over from last year. He also stated that an order would have to be placed with RAP by the end of September. It was agreed that an exact figure to order would be determined at the September meeting, and it will probably be 400-500 kits. Ran reported on landscape efforts, giving a brief update on each of the landscaped area locations. He also advised that the equipment storage shed is now in place at the Public Works yard. He recently has completed some "clean-up" work at the median at the corner of 20th Street and Selves Marina Drive, at the request of residents there. Some suggestions were made far future plantings, both spring and fall, at the landscaped locations. Carl informed the group that he would be out of town for the next (September) meeting date but that Ran would be present to unlock/lock the building, etc. June also asked Barbara Hopson to take minutes in Carl's absence. There was no further business and June adjourned the meeting at 8:35 PM. Carl Walker Beautification Coordinator - 2 -
