04-09-97BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MINUTES Meeting of April 9, 1997 The regular meeting of the Committee was held on Wednesday, April 9, in the Conference Room of City Hall. Present were: Chairperson June Morris, Chuck Pendleton, Jane Vincent, Pamela Fitzwilliams, Ron Schiebler, City Gardener, and Carl Walker, Coordinator. The meeting was called to order at 7:35 PM and a motion made by Chuck Pendleton to approve the minutes of the last meeting as read. Pamela Fitzwilliams seconded and the motion passed. Carl reported, in the absence of Barbara Hopson and Brenda Wray, on the plans for the forthcoming "Spring Bright Spots" tour. The meeting of the sub-committee is still set for Tuesday, April 15 at which time a final timetable will be set. The event will be patterned after the two last such tours and there will be approximately 15 locations through- out the City. June turned in to Carl 2 addresses in the Royal Palms area that he will pass an to Brenda & Barbara H. Chuck reported that he had checked and "Fleet Landing" could not participate in the event this time. Carl also asked that if any member had any recommendations or nominations to for- ward them to Brenda, Barbara H. or him, na later than the end of April, along with a brief description of the property and/or why it was felt to be noteworthy. Jane Vincent had not yet arrived at the meeting, so Carl ad- vised that he had spoken with Jody Ford, daughter of Adelaide Tucker, and plans for the enhancements of the 11th Street beach access were moving forward. Jody also owns a wholesale nursery {East Coast Greenery} in Atlantic Beach and is know- ledgeable on plants, landscaping, etc. He was told that a meeting was scheduled to be held on Monday, April 14, on the subject of the access plans. Ron reported on various landscaping projects that he has been working on. All of the pindo palms, formerly in the Atlantic Blvd. medians, have been transplanted to Sailfish Drive and appear to be healthy. Ron recently completed mulching around their bases and is watering them an a regular basis. He is nearing completion of work at Ahern Street, including the laying of new sod. New mulch is currently on order as well as new pop-up sprinkler heads. New annual plants have also been ordered and will be available next week. Ron advised ,,~ that he plans to start with the flower bed at the "mailbox" area at the Plaza/Seminole Rd. intersection and with the two beds in front of City Hall. Chuck Pendelton distributed photographs of the "Welcome to Atlantic Beach" sign landscaping near the entrance to Fleet Landing. Many of the plants at that location were trans- planted from the Atlantic Boulevard medians. Jane Vincent, who arrived after the meeting started, gave a further update on the 11th Street beach access program. She and several others from the oceanfront section adjacent to 11th St. meet and another meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 14. Jody Ford is assisting and it has been suggested to wait until fall to actually begin the planting and in- stallation of the improvements. This was further discussed by the committee and several suggestions made. Jane will further report at the next regular meeting. Carl gave a brief overview of the budget process for the forthcoming '97-'98 fiscal year and the members expressed that they were satisfied with the budget proposal being pre- sented. Although June Morris has agreed to serve as Chairperson for the next year, no one has come forward to volunteer to serve as vice-chair. After discussion of the options available, it was agreed to defer the annual election of officers until the next meeting when, hopefully, there will be more members present and a candidate willing to accept the task of serving as vice-chairperson. June will continue to serve as Chair in the interim. There was no further business and June adjourned the meeting at 8:50 PM. Carl Walker Beautification Coordinator - 2 -
