BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MINUTES
Meeting of October 8, 1997
The regular meeting of the Committee was held on Wednesday,
October 8, in the City Hall Conference Raam. Present were:
Chairperson June Morris, Barbara Hopson, Gloria Vaughn,
Mimi Ames, Jane Vincent, new member Steve Geuther, City
Gardener Ron Schiebler, and Coordinator, Carl Walker.
The meeting was called to order at 7:35 PM. Barbara Hopson
moved to approve the minutes of the last meeting, as written.
Gloria Vaughn seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
The first item on the agenda was an update on the street end/
beach access improvement program. Gloria Vaughn, reporting
for 13th Street, advised that about 25 resident volunteers
worked at that location last weekend, resulting in a greatly
improved, attractive access. Several members present had been
to the site and agreed and complimented Gloria and her neigh-
bors on their efforts. Gloria further advised that she has
been contacted by a representative of St. 3ohn's County about
the native plantings used and seeking suggestions or recom-
mendations based on the 13th Street project.
June reported that a similar work session took place last
weekend at 11th Street. As a result, a shower was installed
as well as a wooden walkway leading to the shower. Other
improvements were also made at that access and additional
work is planned for the next two weekends.
Carl advised that now that the new budget was in effect, he
would proceed with plans for 8th Street, a very small and
narrow access which basically is to be improved by imple-
mentation of a wooden walkway.
Steve Geuther introduced himself to the committee, explaining
that he recently purchased a house at Oceanfront and 7th St.,
the first lot south of the 7th Street access. He reported
that there were a number of problems at that St. end due to
it's formerly being a vehicular beach access. He also feels
as though there is potential for its being made into an in-
teresting location. He is in hopes that he can organize a
group of residents to plan an improvement design for that
access. Carl will give Steve additional information and sug-
gestions for accomplishing this and will assist in its coor-
dination.

BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MTG. MINUTES, OCTOBER 8, 1997
Barbara Hopson, as Chair for the "Fall Bright Spots Tour",
advised that two meetings are set for her sub-committee. The
first is Tuesday, October 21, intended to be an organization
meeting with assignments to be made. The next one will held
on Tuesday, October 28. Both meetings will be at 7 PM, hope-
fully at the Adele Grage Community Center, if available. The
tour is planned far the weekend of November 15/16.
June led the discussion on the forthcoming luminaria event
and committee sponsored selling of the kits. Carl has placed
the order with R.A.P. to arrive in mid-November. Bits will
be assembled and sold at the City Tree Lighting on Friday,
December 5, and the Committee will again set up a table, as
in the past, in Russell Park on Saturday, December 6 for sale
of the kits. A schedule of volunteers to man the tables at
both sales will be made up at the November meeting.
Ron reported on current landscaping projects, advising .that
the two sago palms in the mailbox area bed at the "5 way in-
tersection" had to be removed as they were beginning to cause
a safety hazard for vehicles due to visibility. The sagos
will be transplanted to other locations within the city. An
order has been placed for 25 flats of pansy plants to be
planted in November in all of the landscaped areas, including
the "Welcome" signs. Ran also reported that a leaf mite has
attacked the lantana plants at the Fleet Landing "Welcome"
sign and he will use fungicide in the hopes of saving them.
June announced that, as has been the practice for the past
few years, no regular meeting will be held in December due
to the luminaria sales and event and holiday schedules.
There was no further business and the meeting adjourned at
8:35 PM.
