BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MINUTES
Meeting of February 12, 1997
The regular meeting of the Committee was held on Gvednesdav,
February 1.2, in the Conference Room of City Hall. Present
were: Clia.irpersorz June .Morris, Mimi. Ames, Chuck Pendleton,
guest/new member Pamela Fitzwilliams, and'Carl Walker, Co-
ordinator.
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 Phi and a motion made
by Chuck Pendleton to approve the minzttes of the Last meeting
as read. Mimi Ames seconded and the oration passed.
Juno explained briefly what factors had prompted the change
of the annual "Arbor Day" celebration from January until mid-
March. Tlie tree sale i.s scheduled for Saturday, March 15 and
wil_1 again be held in Russell Parl:. Carl will send letters to
local nurseries and June offered to fo]_low up by phone. Bar-
bara Hopson, wlzo is out of town, will be contacted to see if
she is willing to handle some activities at A. B. Elementary
school, similar to tl~tose held in the past.
It was suggested that our vanity license plates be sold at
the event. There was also discussion about volunteers to be
at the sale for the selling of the tags and to be available
to assist with the nurseries. June suggested that members
could serve iti shifts for approximately 2 hours each. She
a]_so said she would be available for the sale a].l day. A
listing of volunteers can be made at the March meeting.
On the suk~,iect of "St>ring Bright Spots Tour", Jurte lead spoken
with Brenda Wrav. Brenda has agreed to work on the tour
plans although her schedule doesn't allow her to attend the
regular evening meetings. Barbara 1•lol>son will be contacted,
when she returns, to see if slie can help with the tour also.
Carl will call Robin Saergel in the hopes srte will be agree-
able to doing the locator snap as she has previously done.
Discttssi.on on publicity followed.
Carl reported that the "Welcome to Atlantic Beach" sign at
the Atlantic Boulevard location will be moved further west
near the Intracoastal waterway to correspond with the recent
annexation which extended the City limits. Ron had drawn up
a rough diagram showi.tig the new location and Carl passed it
around to l:.lzose present. There is also a power pole located
nearby so Carl wil]_ check into the possibility of having
power in order to light the sign in some way.
Carl also brought up the "Daily Bulletin Board" sign on Atl.
Blvd. on propertiT now within our City limits. Complaints
have been made about its appearance and the City Manager re-
quested that it be discussed by the Committee. In the mean-
time, Carl teas determined that the Community Development Di-
rector {G. Worley} is working with the o~,Tner and ..requested
that the addition of the top "scalloped" area be removed as
does not comply with city code. When this occurs, the sign's
appearance will be somewhat improved.
The problem of meeting attendance was discussed and June e~>-
pressed that it is understandable that some people can not
attend meetings on a regular basis but are available for pro-
jects and committee events. On the other hand, there are some
names on the membership list who periodically may come to a
meeting but do not follow through by any other participation.
This makes it difficult in planning and carrying out under-
takings or assigning tasks.
It was agreed that Carl will go over the membership list and
prepare a letter to those members whose status is question-
able. Prior to sending the letter, Carl will get approval
from June of the correspondence and the list of people that
will receive it.
In the absence of Ron, Garl briefly mentioned some of the
landscaping projects that are underway or planned. He em-
phasized that Ron ~zas removed approximately 90% of the de-
sirable plants from the Atlantic Boulevard medians. Chuck
Pendleton asked that any remaining plants be considered for
use in the area adjacent to the sign near Fleet Landing. He
is in hopes that this section could be developed into a park
like setting to be maintained by Fleet Landing residents,.
Chuck also reported that he had recently been named to serve
on an association consisting of representatives from NAS-May-
po.r.t, the Beaches Chamber of Commerce and Mayport Road tner-
charzts whose aim is to enforce cleanup and improvements to
the areas bordering on Mayport Road.
There was no further business arzd Jurze adjourned the meeting
at 8:40 PM.
