BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MINUTES
Meeting of June 11, 1997
The regular meeting of the Committee was held on Wednesday,
June 11, in the Conference Room of City Hall. Present were:
Chairperson June Morris, Pamela Fitzwilliams, Barbara Hapson,
Gloria Vaughn, Barbara Bonner, Jane Vincent, Ron Schiebler,
City Gardener, and Carl Walker, Coordinator. Alsa attending
was guest Tony Gargiulo, a resident of 11th Street.
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM and a motion made
by Jane Vincent to approve the minutes of the last meeting,
as read. Pamela Fitzwilliams seconded and the motion passed.
The first item of business was a report an the "Spring Bright
Spots Tour" held in May. In the absence of Barbara Hopson,
who arrived later in the meeting, Carl advised that the event
was a success, with over 120 flyers/maps being distributed.
In addition, the addresses were shown in the "Beaches Leader"
prior to the tour. Letters have since been sent to the par-
ticipants thanking them for being a part of the tour and any
feedback which Carl has heard has been very favorable.
Gloria Vaughn began the discussion on beach access/street
ends improvements by reporting on 13th Street. She gave some
background on what has transpired at that location. The re-
sidents responsible for maintenance have moved and the group
is exploring ways of re-landscaping the access to make it
more maintenance free (i.e., less grass area). Meetings will
be held, but no work will take place until after September.
Carl advised that he will still getting contacts from the
groups at 12th and 3rd Streets who are refurbishing their
areas .
Jane Vincent introduced Tony Gargiulo, an 11th St. resident
who has agreed to chair the group working on improvements at
that street end. Jane will serve as co-chair. Tony gave the
background and results of the meetings which have been held
and outlined the various aspects of the proposed improvements
being discussed. Their committee will meet on the 2nd and
4th Tuesday of each month, working toward submitting a pro-
posal. Several suggestions/recommendations were made which
should prove helpful to the group. A status report will be
made at future beautification meetings.
June led a discussion regarding the holding of a July meet-
ing. For the past two years, no regular meeting has been
held during that month due to peak vacation time absenteeism.
BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES, JUNE 11, 1997
After discussion, the committee, by consensus, agreed that no
meeting will be held in July; the next regular meeting will
take place in August. Carl will send out a memo to all mem-
bers of this decision and as a reminder.
Ron reported on landscape efforts, giving a brief update on
each of the areas being maintained through efforts of beauti-
fication. He also advised that, at the request of the City,
improvements are being made at the median entrance to "Aqua-
tic Gardens" which is City property. He has removed the four
large pampas grass clumps that were located there and plans
are being made for simple landscaping to be installed and
maintained by the homeowner's association. Ron has also been
asked to relandscape the area directly in front of the Public
Safety building.
June brought up two future committee sponsored events, the
"Fall Bright Spots Tour" and the holiday luminaria sale.
Since the next regular meeting will not be until August, it
will be important to work on the plans for these at the next
meeting. Carl reminded the members that an order would have
to be placed for the luminarias no later than mid-September.
In the meantime, he will get an inventory done of the re-
maining kits on hand from last year.
There was no further business and June adjourned the meeting
at 8:45 PM.
