City of Atlantic Beach

Atlantic Beach, FL 32233

Dear Commissioner,
I am a taxpaying member of Atlantic Beach who came to the last city council meeting. I am
concerned about the direction you, the city council, and mayor are seeking to take in regards to
issuing long-term contracts(or any contracts)with for-profit businesses or individuals. It sounds
like this direction is what you are pursuing. When taxpayers find out of this many will be upset
using taxpayer money, services, or facilities to subsidies "favored"businesses or individuals
making money on city property and services. I can understand allowing non-profits such as Little
League,AA, and Atlantic Beach Experimental Theater to use facilities, as they are set up to
service large groups of people and do not run as for-profit businesses.
This is going to be a slippery slope you are planning to take setting a dangerous precedence for
the city of Atlantic Beach. I understand in the case of the children's theater instructor, Ms.
Richardson, she does not even live in Atlantic Beach. She seems to be only servicing 30 some
families, not the thousands that Atlantic Beach Experimental Theater and Little League serve.
She has the potential of making thirty thousand dollars or more while being subsidized by
taxpayers.
In setting this precedent, people from all over Jacksonville will be asking for the same status and
deal, a$200 dollar rental for a year of access and space to do their business on city property.
A friend who does live in Atlantic Beach stated that if this goes through he is going to approach
the city to use the large back room in Adele Grage Community Center. He teaches an advanced
photo editing class in his home that meets twice a week. He needs more space and would like
this deal. He teaches between 20 and 30 people in a week.
I am opposed to this and wonder if you have thought through where this will end up.
Thank you for your time.
