Mayor Howell called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. . Be announced that
the Commission was meeting in Special Session for the consideration of
appointment to the vacancy created by the resignation of Dr. James E.
Mboon. He added that the Commission had received three letters prior to
the meeting and two more were handed to the City Clerk during the day.
A total of five candidates applied for the seat as follows: Mr. Joel
Hollingsworth, Mrs. Clare A. McCreary, Mr. Robert B. Persons, Jr. , Mr.
George Bull, Sr. , and Mr. George R. Olsen. All candidates were present
at the meeting with the exception of Mr. Olsen.
Commissioner Jensen asked each candidate if they intended to run for the
seat in October if they were appointed. The response was as follows:
Mr. Persons: He was giving the matter serious consideration, but he
did not wish to commit at the present time.
Mr. Bull: If he were appointed he would consider running after
attending the meetings between now and qualifying time
on September 8th.
Mrs.McCreary: Yes, she was strongly considering running in October.
Mr. Hollingsworth: Yes, he was strongly considering the matter, but
he would like to get his feet wet before committing.
Mayor Howell asked what incentive each candidate had since they all under-
stood the various criticisms the city has been under. They all said they
would like to offer their services to help the city at this time and
would be willing to carry the full weight and responsibility of a Commis-
sioner. Commissioner Van Ness spoke on behalf of Mr. Olsen. She stated
that he was a past Mayor of Atlantic Beach in 1963, and has a good working
knowledge of the city. She had spoken to Mr. Olsen about the matter but he
did not state whether or not he would be a candidate in October. She
expressed the opinion that he would be a very well qualified candidate
but she assumed from the conversation that,if appointed, this would only
be to fill-in on the position until the election.
The decision was made to vote by ballot. The ballots were handed to the
City Clerk to read out. The vote was three to one for George Olsen.
