WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. devoted his life to advancing social
justice, equality and opportunity; and
WHEREAS, when Dr. King shared his dream with the world atop the steps of the Lincoln
Memorial, he gave mighty voice to the United States of America's founding ideals; and
WHEREAS, few could have imagined that Dr. King would be forever memorialized with a
monument not far where he stirred the nation's collective conscience to action; and
WHEREAS, in courageously and skillfully encouraging our nation to recognize the universal
threat of injustice anywhere, Dr. King validated that those who love their country can change it; and
WHEREAS, the life and work of Dr. King continues to inspire and shape our community, state
and nation; and
WHEREAS, to honor the legacy of Dr. King, Congress passed a bill in 1983 providing for the
third Monday of January to be observed as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and President Ronald
Reagan signed the bill into law; and
WHEREAS, this day focuses on bringing people together and breaking down barriers that
have divided communities and the nation.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Ellen Glasser, Mayor of the City of Atlantic Beach, Florida, do
hereby proclaim Monday, January 15, 2018, as
DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY
and encourage all Atlantic Beach citizens to honor Dr. King's legacy by participating in this
observance.

hand and caused the Official Seal of the City
of Atlantic Beach to be affixed this 8th day of
January 2018.
