AGENDA ITEM: Authorize the Mayor to sign an Arbor Day Proclamation
proclaiming April 26, 2002. as Arbor Day and sign the
application for Tree City USA re-certification.

BACKGROUND: In past years, the City has been listed as a Tree City and in
order to keep that recognition, the Mayor must sign the
attached Proclamation and Tree City USA re-certification
application. This proclamation encourages citizens to plant
and preserve trees and recognize April 26, 2002 as Arbor
Day in Atlantic Beach.
In accordance with Arbor Day, we are planning to use
$10,000 from the Tree Fund to plant trees at the following
locations (City Right of Way):
o Tideviews Preserve
o Plaza Practice Field
o City Hall Parking Area
o Levy Road
RECOMMENDATION: Authorize the Mayor to sign an Arbor Day Proclamation
proclaiming Apri126, 2002 as Arbor Day and sign the
application for Tree City USA re-certification.

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the celebration of Arbor Day was first observed in 1872 with the
planting of more than a million trees in the State of Nebraska, and
WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now an annual celebration throughout the nation and
the world, and
WHEREAS, trees can reduce erosion of our precious soil, clean the air, moderate
the temperature, reduce our heating and cooling costs, and provide habitat for our
wildlife, and
WHEREAS, trees aze a renewable resource giving us paper, building material and
fuel, and providing countless products made of wood, and
WHEREAS, trees in our City increase property values, enhance the economic
vitality of our businesses and serve to beautify our community; and
WHEREAS, trees, wherever they aze planted, are a source of joy and a symbol of
renewal.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John Meserve, Mayor of the City of Atlantic Beach, do
hereby proclaim Apri126, 2002, as
ARBOR DAY
in the City of Atlantic Beach and urge all citizens to celebrate Arbor Day and to support
efforts to protect our trees and woodlands, and
Further, l urge all citizens to plant trees for the beauty and weal being of this and
future generations.
