Thompson, City Manager BACKGROUND: One of the first steps in the development of Pine Island Park (Dutton Island) is to assure that vehicular traffic can safely drive to and from the island. At the present time, the culvert on the causeway is very deteriorated, and it is unsafe for vehicular traffic. Staffwould like to develop aDesign/Build RFP to replace the culvert. There are a variety ofpre-constructed bridges that can be purchased and installed at this location, and there needs to be some decision making relative to the appearance and the functionality of such a bridge. For this reason, staff would like to collect research in this azea and present some of the options and findings to the Pazks and Recreation Board for their input. After obtaining their input, staffwill bring the RFP back to the City Commission for their approval before seeking sealed bids. At this time, we anticipate the cost of this project to be about $70,000. Preliminary research has shown that the installation is more expensive than the prefabricated bridges or culverts, and we will seek vazious alternatives relative to the entire project for the City Commission's review. RECOMMENDATION: We recommend the approval for staff to develop aDesign/Build RFP for the replacement of the culvert on the causeway to Pine Island Pazk. ATTACHMENT: See preliminary information from Public Works Director Bob Kosoy REVIEWED BY CITY MANAGER: AGENDA ITEM NUMBER: ., MEMORANDUM March 5, 1999 TO: Timmy Johnson, Director of Recreation George Worley, Community Development Dir. FROM: Bob Kosoy, Director of Public Works ~~~ SUBJECT: Dutton Island Culvert The existing culvert at Dutton Island has an opening which measures 6' x 9'4", and is n corrugated metal pipe which is in very bad shape and the road has been closed due to its structurally unsafe condition. On March 5, 1999 we received the attached quotation from ConSpan for a precast culvert/bridge at Dutton Road. The smallest section made by ConSpan is 12' wide, and they are quoting on an arch shaped culvert 12' x 9' which would accommodate a 24' roadway. The total cost is $19,715, delivered to the job site. This price does not include foundation work or installation, which the vendor estimates at $40,000-$50,000 additional. Therefore, a more appropriate budget price at this time would be approximately $70,000. cc: David Thompson RSK/Imh r~' _. .. _. ~f1AK-U5-yy hK I 1 U ~ 5~ Hf1 ~ ~ ~ ~ j r. u 1 ~- '" - . ®~ 0 Job No..__ _,----------, Sh.
