Fwd- QuadFoam 500 NatureSeal ESRGentlemen,
I just spoke with Ken Allison from TPR-2 (I’m not sure of his connection with Quadrant, but I know him to very knowledgable.
We agreed that a thermal barrier is required throughout the building, in some form as we discussed earlier on site.
We also agreed that I was wrong about the ignition barrier. No additional spray-on coating is required in attics if the thermal barrier is present and continuous. I read Section 4.4.2.1
wrong.
As it stands now, someone should walk the project and specify ceilings and compartmentalized attic spaces to ensure a continuous thermal barrier between the spray foam and the interior
of the building.
I’ll help if you want me to. It will be Friday or next week for me
Regards,
Dan Arlington

Representative from quadrant Foam will be calling you today. There is no thermal barrier to be sprayed on this foam unless the area is considered "storage". Areas that are occupied
must have sheetrock or be sprayed, attic areas do not fall under this requirement. The only situation that would be different would be a mechanical room etc

Stan,
Regarding thermal barriers; as far as I know, there are no spray foam insulations that do not require a thermal barrier, per FBC-B, Chapter 26.
Regarding ignition barriers; some spray foam products have passed that limited burn test, allowing them to be applied without the ignition barrier.
The thermal barrier is always required, whether or not the ignition barrier is required.
The Evaluation Services Report (ESR) is the document referenced to determine the above requirements for each specific product.
Your ESR, IAPMO-0285, clearly states that both the ignition and thermal barriers are required.
Passing the required tests in AC-377 only allows the product to be used subject to its limitations, not unprotected.
Pete and Danny; please make sure the ongoing construction does not cover the spray foam insulation until this issue is resolved.
The ignition and thermal barriers are a life safety issue and must be applied to all foam surfaces to be effective.
If you would like to walk the project and discuss areas that can separated, covered, and/or sealed off to reduce the amount of spray-on barrier coatings, I am available Friday of this
week or any day next week. Let me know.
Sincerely,
Dan Arlington

Dan,
I am the insulation contractor on the ABCC job. We have spoken before awhile back when you were with St. Johns county. I will forward this on to my supplier and get you the correct
document. I know that this foam has passed the testing and is no longer required an additional barrier. Will handle this asap.

Danny,
ESR-0285 is the relevant document.
Reading Section 4.3:
-A thermal barrier is required between the spray foam and the interior of the building.
-1/2” gypsum wall board qualifies as a thermal barrier.
-If the ½” gyp board is not present, 4.3.2 applies, DC 315 with the DC 135 primer is required. Coating thickness and amounts required are given.
Reading Section 4.4:
-An ignition barrier is required in attic spaces, in addition to the thermal barrier below.
-A spray on thermal barrier also counts as an ignition barrier.
-A lesser coating of DC 315, without the primer, is allowed as an alternative to the prescriptive ignition barrier.
As I read 0285:
A thermal barrier is required between the spray foam and the interior of the building throughout the building.
Where attics are created by the gypsum ceiling, an ignition barrier is required in the attic space above.
Where attic spaces interconnect, the more stringent coating is required.
Wood ceilings and drop-in ceiling tiles do not qualify as a thermal barrier.
Sprinkler systems do not negate the above requirements.
Please discuss this with the Architect and Insulator and call me with any questions.
I called the manufacturer and verified this, before writing this email.
Let me know.
Sincerely,
Dan Arlington
