05-26-99vw MINUTES OF CULTURAL ARTS ADVISORY BOARD MEETING • May 26, 1999 A regular meeting of the Cultural Arts Advisory Board was held Wednesday, May 26, 1999, in the City Hall Commission Chambers. Present were Chairperson Alice Gartland, Nancy Bodge, Nancy DeCandis, Rosemary Fletcher, Janelle Wagoner, and Staff Member Susan Dunham. The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Alice Gartland at 6:50 p.m. Approval of Minutes Nancy DeCandis motioned to accept the Minutes of the meeting of April 28 as written, Nancy Bodge seconded and the motion carried. Report on First Night Fund Raiser Nancy DeCandis updated the Board on the proceeds raised from the First Night Fund Raiser. Income: $12,715; Expenses: $8,926.46 with a Profit of $3,788.54. Nancy Bodge clarified that the profit was really $6,200, since convention costs (not a part of the fund raiser) were expenses included in the budget. Two issues were brought up for the Board to discuss for next year: 1) How to deal with the excessive drinking on the boat. Suggestions were selling tickets for drinks at the door; designating the bartender or a particular individual to watch for excessive drinking; asking police to be in attendance at the end of the cruise; and telephone numbers for cab companies. 2) Is the cost of the insurance, which the City requires, worth First Night being under the City? isAlice Gartland congratulated Nancy DeCandis for a job well done on the Fund Raiser. Art Classes in Atlantic Beach Elementary Nancy Bodge reported to the Board that there is not any funding for an art teacher next year. Karen Sadler will continue to coordinate art programs at the school and the Board will maintain its advisory role. Janelle Wagoner stated that the Watercolor Society might be used as a resource for classes. Nancy Bodge suggested compiling a list for Karen Sadler of people who could perform art workshops. Summer Art Classes Chris Stouffer will teach the drawing classes and Kristin Brodt will probably be able to conduct the pottery classes. No definite date has been set but it is usually the last two weeks of July and the first two weeks of August. The classes are for third graders and up, and space is limited to 12 to 15 participants. Adults have been interested in taking the classes but they have not wanted to take the spot of a child. Class sizes could be larger if the teachers had additional help. Janelle Wagoner will try to locate students who might be willing to assist with these classes. Concert in the Park Alice Gartland advised the Board that Karin Clark would like to coordinate the "Concert in the Park" next year and hire the same Dixie Land band, TGIF. Karin would like to find out the Jaguars schedule to ensure the Jaguars do not have a home game on the date that is chosen. 0 AW Exhibit Space Maureen King advised Alice Gartland that there was no space available to hang works of art at City Hall. Rag Time would not take the time to meet with Alice. Alice will speak with Gary Seabrook at Hornblowers. The Board members also suggested the Library, Rite Spot and the Beach Diner. Alice Gartland had not heard from Suzanne Shaughnessy regarding the same for Sea Turtle Inn. Grants for 2000 Alice Gartland will look into this further. Jo Pillmore was suggested as a person to contact for grant writing. Theater Complex Alice Gartland stated that the Players -By -The -Sea theater group had previously come before the Council to ask for land for a new theater. At that time, Jim Jarboe advised the Players that there was land available for a theater. Nancy DeCandis will talk to Jim Jarboe to ask about this land. The Players have told Alice that they have the money to build a theater (which would also serve as an art center) but they need land to build it on. Rosemary Fletcher stated that she had spoken to Lyman Fletcher when he was mayor and he told her that the City had money set aside for an art center. Alice suggested that establishing an art center in Atlantic Beach be one of the goals of the Cultural Arts Board. First Night Nancy DeCandis suggested talking to the U.S. Navy to see if they would build an imitation of a submarine for First Night. • Nancy DeCandis relayed to the Board Suzanne Shaughnessy's apology for not being at the meeting due to a previous engagement. The meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m. • &. 4vd" - Alice Gartland, Chairperson
