05-19-99• • • MINUTES OF FIRST NIGHT COMMITTEE May 19, 1999 A regular meeting of the First Night Committee was held Wednesday, May 19, 1999, in the City Hall Commission Chambers. Present were Chairperson Cindy Grossberg, Suzette Abrass, Nancy Bodge, Lynn Charest, Nancy DeCandis, Mary Jenkins, Eloise Koerber, Chinta Perera, Elise Sloan and Staff Member Susan Dunham. The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Cindy Grossberg at 7:40 p.m. Budget Cindy Grossberg presented the budget figures to the Committee. Fund -Raiser Profit for the fund-raiser was $6,270. The following are recommendations for next year's fund-raiser: • to supply liquor through a restaurant (at cost) instead of through a distributor; • to not put return postage on return envelopes in invitations; • to develop a policy regarding free tickets; • to take into consideration that some participants of fund-raiser consume too much alcohol. Nancy DeCandis thanked Cindy Grossberg for the wonderful job that she did on the fund-raiser. Suonsorshin The Committee has not yet approached the City of Atlantic Beach regarding sponsorship of First Night. Nancy Bodge is to meet with City Bank regarding sponsorship. Nancy will meet with Suzette Abrass to get pictures of the fund-raiser to take with her to the meeting. Convention Renort Nancy DeCandis, Suzette Abrass and Eloise Koerber thanked the Committee again for sending them to the convention. First Night Activities Slides were presented from First Night International showing examples of activities from other First Night cities. It was suggested to utilize more community help, i.e., MOPS, summer or after school programs, Habijax, Beaches Art Center, restaurants, scout troops, etc. Eloise Koerber challenged each and every Committee member to create magical moments for all that attend First Night. Nancy DeCandis asked the Committee members to find people to help with these ideas. Button Design Nancy DeCandis suggested Mary Jenkins contact Bob Kirk, Kay Kaufmann and Jim Dupree as resources for a possible art contest for a button/poster design. • • • New Volunteers Mary Jenkins indicated that a letter from the Chairperson inviting interested people to attend the next meeting might be more effective in attracting new volunteers than just a verbal invitation. Nancy DeCandis asked the Committee members to give her names and addresses of any interested people. Also, the Committee members were asked to give Nancy DeCandis names of organizations that might be interested in volunteering so that Christine Lester or Margaret Sherrill could give a presentation to solicit their help. Nancy asked each Committee member to bring someone with them to the next meeting. Approval of the Minutes Mary Jenkins motioned to approve the minutes of the meeting of April 28, 1999, Elise Sloan seconded and the motion carried. The meeting was adjourned at 9:05 p.m. Nancy DeCandis, SChairperson
