This step by step woodworking project is about 8x 12 lean to s hed plans. If you need more
storage space in the backyard, but you are short on space, building this lean to shed will make the
most of it. Check out PART 2 and PART 3 of the project, so you learn how to build the roof and
the double doors. Read the local codes before starting the project, as in some cases a permit
might be requir ed.
We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy
weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before
adjusting the size of the components at the proper s ize. Drill pilot holes trough the components
before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.

Building a 8x12 lean to shed
Building-the-floor-of-the-shed
Build the floor for the garden shed from 2x4 or 2x6 lumber. Cut the joists at 144" and at 93"
using a sharp saw. Drill pilot holes through the rim joists and insert 3 1/2" screws into the
perpendicular components. Make sure the edges are flu s h. Measure the diagonals and make
adjustments till they are equal.

Attaching-the-s kids
Attach 4x4 skids to the floor frame, so you can lift the shed from the ground and protect it from
mois ture. Drill pilot holes through the joists and ins ert 4 1/2" sc rews into the skids. Alternatively,
you can use rafter ties to secure the skids to the floor frame.

Fitting-the-floor-sheets
Attach the 3/4" plywood sheets to the floor frame. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and

Front wall -Frame
Build the frame for the fro nt wall from 2x4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert
3 1/2" screws into the studs. In addition, you need to use 2x6 lumber for the double header. Fit
1/2" plywood between th e double headers and insert 2 1/2" screws to lock th em together tightly.

Continue the project by assembli ng the back wall frame. Cut all the components to the right
dimensions, according to the information from the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the plates
and insert 3 1/2" screws into the studs. Place the studs every 24" on center. Fit the middle
s upports between the studs, by toenailing them .

Building the shed
Fit the wall frames to the floor of the shed. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 3
1/2" screws into the floor. In addition, lock the adjacent walls together by using screws, Use a
spirit level to plumb the walls and a carpentry square to make sure the corners are right angled.

Back wall -Siding
Fit the Tl-11 sid ing panels to the back wall of the shed. Align the edges with attention and insert
6-8d nails, every 8", along the fram ing. Leave no gaps between the sheets for a professional

Cut the panels to the right size, as shown in the diagram. Fit the Tl-1 1 siding panels to the sides

How to build a lean to shed roof
Building the rafters
The first step of the project is to build the rafters from 2x4 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the 2x4
b eams and then get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the edges w ith sandpaper.

Fitting the roofing
You could fit asphalt shingles to protect the shed, as it is a straight forward solution. Therefore,
install roofing felt over the roofin g sheets, making sure the strips overlap at least 2". Secure the
tar paper to the plywood sheets w ith roofing staples. Fit the s ide drip edges over the roofing felt,
whi le the bottom drip edges should b e fit under. Place a starting course a t the bottom of the roof,
before installing the asphalt shingles. Always read the manufacturing instructions before starting
the installation, as there are several aspects that differ.
Smart Tip: The first course sh ould star with a 3 tab shingle , the second course with a 2 1/2 tab ,
the third course with a 2 tab, the forth course with a l l/2 tab, the fifth course w ith a l tab, the
sixth course with a 1/2 tab. Repeat th e process from the beginning, starting with the seventh
course. Don't fo rget that the shin gles should overhang from the drip edge about a 1/4". In
addition, secure the asphalt shingles to the roof decking w ith tacks.

Building the doors
Use Tl-1 1 siding for the door panels and use 2x4 lumber for the trims. A lign everythin g with
attention and th en use 1 5/8" screws to lock the siding to the trims. Install th e diagonal braces to
the double doors.

Fit the double doors to the opening and align the edges flus h. Use hinges to secure the doors into
place tightly. Moreover , you need to install a latch and a h andle.

Apply a few coats of paint or stain over the comp onents, so you enhance the look of the shed and
to make them weather resistant. You can also add 1 x4 trims to the comers and to the four sides
of the shed, if you want to add more appeal to it.
