Re: Interpretation of Section 17-2, Signs and Advertising Structures
Dear Mr. Herman:
I have reviewed your letter requesting interpretation of certain provisions contained within the City’s
sign regulations. I apologize if there has been a previous misinterpretation or misunderstanding
related to the specific provisions you have cited. Chapter 17, Section 2 (a) states: where the area of
signs are controlled by the property, building or unit, this frontage shall constitute the maximum
sign area for that property, building or unit frontage. It is clear within this subsection, that
maximum allowable sign area is controlled by the applicable frontage.
In the case of the signs you have proposed, which are Flat signs attached to the building, the
controlling standard is established in Chapter 17, Section 2 (b) (1), which limits Flat Signs to one (1)
square foot of linear frontage of the building. In other words, the maximum allowable sign area is
controlled by the length of the building frontage, and equals one square foot of wall signs for each
linear distance of the building front. I hope this clarifies this matter, and again, I regret any past
misunderstanding.
Sincerely,
Jim Hanson
City Manager
