RE: Proposed BP Sign
COMMENTS: Ms. Johnson, as I have previously advised, the two existing Amoco
pylon signs are Nonconforming Signs. (The sign located by the car wash, on the
Plaza Road side is considered to be an abandoned sign, and must be removed.)
The City’s sign regulations related to commercial signs and nonconforming signs
(provided herewith) permit up to 25% of the face material of a sign to be
replaced. I am unable to determine from your faxed sketch what amount of sign
face material is proposed to be replaced, but if it exceeds the permitted 25%, the
currently effective sign regulations would apply to any new sign. In summary,
the current regulations would permit a sign of up to 96 square feet, or a maximum
eight-feet in height and 12-feet in width. Because the property has frontage on
two streets, a secondary sign of the same size would be permitted on the Plaza
Street side. All Freestanding Signs are required to be a minimum distance of five
feet from property lines, and clear sight distance must also be maintained.
I would also make you aware, that while not mandatory, the City’s Commercial
Corridor regulations provide for a 50% reduction in sign permit fees where
certain types of signs are used. I have provided a copy of this provision.
