Sherry and 5th Street (Sidewalk)John -- I appreciate your input on the sidewalk issue that we discussed at the November 10th Commission Meeting. The location of the intersection is 5th and Sherry Drive at the southeast
corner, and, as of this morning, the property corner is still staked. Subsequent to the discussion at the Commission Meeting, the City Manager has asked the Community Development Director,
Sonya Doerr, and I, to meet with the homeowner. I called the homeowner last week, but she was unavailable and assured me that she will be returning my call this week.
1. I have explored many possibilities with the homeowner, and to date, the only acceptable alternative is to place the sidewalk on the north side of the street. These alternatives
included placing the concrete driveway apron at no cost to the homeowner. We will continue to explore the possibility of connecting a yard drain to this basin to assist in reducing
her lot drainage problems.
2. There are many ways that the issue could be resolved by redoing the drainage, which includes lowering the basin and building the sidewalk at a radius similar to its original location.
These are costly solutions that negatively impact the turning movements from Sherry Drive onto 5th Street. However, if they are our only options, we will consider them.
Thank you for your concern and we will continue to pursue a solution with the homeowner. -- Bob

10th and Cherry Streets
Bob, I promised you that I would provide you with some suggestions
concerning the sidewalk issue at 10th and Cherry Streets. The following
are some suggestions:
1. I would have Major John Mercer's office call and ask the people that
live at Fifth and Cherry what alternatives they might suggest for their
intersection. Ask them to lay out their suggestions and to provide in
writing (with pictures and diagrams) what their solutions might be. Give
them a reasonable time frame to respond, say two weeks. Hopefully they
may provide the city with a resolution that is acceptable to both sides.
2. The following is my suggestion that you may want to consider as one of
your alternatives.
A. Looking west toward Cherry, I would realign the curb to a
straighter line on Fifth.
I would place the side walk into the street, leaving the
drain at the intersection of
Fifth and Cherry streets. The side walk would cover part of
the drain. I am sure
that you and your department would want to check out the
drain, to ensure that it
functions correctly, prior to making the final adjustments.
You may have to lower
the drain at Fifth and Cherry. You may also want to offer a
way to drain the water
out of the homeowners yard and into the street.
B. An alternative may be to provide them with a paved driveway
apron.
Hopefully, these suggestions help you. I'm sorry that we were not able
to get together.
Sincerely Yours,
John R. Courtright
