January 2022.pdfGreetings, and I wish you the happiest New Year ever! I wanted to report on an exciting endeavor for 2022. The Mayor's Council on Health and Well-Being was formed to support the City's vision for the future, the Commission's quality of life (QOL) initiative, and the beaches potential participation in the larger Blue Zones Project Jacksonville. If you haven't heard about the global Blue Zones movement, this model is the result of studying diverse communities where people live longest and are healthiest. Their experts found that 80% of health outcomes are the result of lifestyle and environment, not genetics. After a County-wide assessment last year, the three beach cities were identified as one of three focused Blue Zones project zones in Duval County. While data support that life satisfaction is already high at the beaches, we believe that strong policies, planning, education, and community engagement can make life at the beach even better! If you want to learn more, check out www.bluezones.com/activate-jacksonville. While the Council on Health and Well-Being in Atlantic Beach is separate from the Blue Zones project, we can learn from it. Council members will identify topics with many issues in mind: demographics and trends; community health/risk indicators; inventory of programs; challenges and opportunities; and philanthropy and volunteerism. Eleven members of our community have been appointed as Council members, and they will meet through November 2022. Subject matter experts will be invited to present, and a final report will be issued. Public involvement is encouraged. Our first planning meeting will be in the Commission Chamber on January 12 at 12 noon. Bring your lunch and learn along with us! To get us started, the City has adopted a vision statement for the future. Approved last month - and after a methodical process that included more than 785 survey responses - the AB2040Vision statement follows: In Atlantic Beach, we have a strong sense of belonging and safety. Our citizens and government care deeply about community character, and we understand that unified support is required to preserve it. We are graced with the functional beauty of our beach, our marsh and our tree canopy. Our shady streets and multi-use paths connect our welcoming neighborhoods and vibrant local businesses. Our city supports our diverse, multigenerational, socially linked community with green spaces, active lifestyles, parks, and programming. Speaking for the City, it is our honor to serve you the city that we all love. We look forward to more folks engaging with us, whether in person, at public meetings, by volunteering to serve on committees, through emails and email subscriptions, by visiting our website and project pages, or by checking us out on social media.
