My employment at Florida Community College (15 years) provided opportunities to work with diverse populations and handle a variety of problem-solving situations. As an administrator—first, as Coordinator of FCCJ's Weekend College, then the Womens' Center— I learned to listen carefully, weigh alternatives and interpret my decisions diplomatically. As instructor in a program for displaced homemakers, I learned to work one-on-one with people of widely varying economic, educational and cultural levels. As a researcher/writer at Jacksonville Community Council (2 years), I learned the value of community commitment in solving problems proactively and the importance of interpreting committee recommendations clearly and precisely. I have served on a number of Boards of Directors, including The League of Women Voters (county president) and Pablo Towers Retirement Residence. Please provide a brief explanation of your interest or any special qualifications you have in this field and your reasons for wishing to be appointed to this board/committee. • • f Had I been sensitive to early clues, I would, correctly, have chosen a career in landscaping! My earliest • memories are of plants: from the age of two, I clearly recall the hydrangea bush by our back steps and the rows of red spider lilies in my aunt's garden. Many years later, totally misdirected in my career, I completed the Master Gardener Program, served two years on the MG telephone answer line and held plant clinics in area nurseries. As a homeowner in Oceanwalk, I designed the requisite landscape plan for our property. I also am a failed member of the Jacksonville Rose Society; I got tired of spraying! As a 34 year resident of Atlantic Beach, I increasingly appreciate the natural beauty we have—imagine: a beach as well as the natural Florida woodland—and would like to have a part in preserving it. We are so very fortunate. Donna L. First, I am a Board Certified Emergency Medicine physician, _ trained here in Jacksonville. As such,I will be comfortable relating to issues of the Florida State Health Code. My camaraderie with many of the current leaders in the medical community may also benefit our efforts here in Atlantic Beach. Additionally. I was the founder(and CEO) of a small real estate investment and development company in Myrtle Beach, SC. From this experience I have gained a modest-appreciation and understanding of housing and building codes, zoning issues, and the like. Finally,I have been chairperson of several committees in large hospitals, giving me experience in the challenges of leadership and successful navigation of complex issues involving diverse groups of people. I would be happy to elaborate on the details of th ese experiences and how they may allow me to effectively serve the community of Atlantic Beach. Please provide a brief explanation of your interest or any special qualifications you have in this field and your reasons for wishing to be appointed to this board/committee. My interest in serving on one of these committees stems from my appreciation of the Atlantic Beach community and a desire to be involved in that (tory) community. For mc, long-term commitment to a place, or a job, or a - hospital, is born from involvement In that way, I became a part of it's present anti it's future_ My special - qualifications include: (I)my medical background, providing technical, scientific, and practical knowledge;(2)my familiarity with hard work, long hours, and commitment; (3) my ability to work with all walks of people, from CEO's to laborers, smoothly; (4)my understanding of business, finance, and commerce obtained from my family and developed in my"non-in edical" endeavors;(5)my flexible schedule that affords me many days off during the "work week"to help complete the work of the Board, meet with contacts. etc. I feel that I have a lot to offer either of these Boards and to the leaders of our, comm unity. I wish, truly, to participate in the work of keeping Atlantic Beach such a great place to live. Bussey, City Clerk, 800 Seminole Road, Atlantic Beach,FL 32233 1 July 1, 2005 Application for a position on the Community Development Board, City of Atlantic Beach 1)My professional experience* as a successful teacher and advisor (counselor) afforded me ample and varied opportunities to work with people who had problems, needed guidance, and required the active participation of many others to solve their problems. I certainly understand that different people bring different perceptions and expectations to any discussion and situation. 2) My husband and I have owned several properties in Atlantic Beach. Working with — the City whenever required,we upgraded and improved those properties. Except for our home, we sold all of those properties and are pleased to report that all of them are today attractive and flourishing. 3) In 1986, I started and operated a successful small business** in Atlantic Beach, an experience that remains with me still! I am very much aware of the impact a business has upon the community and how important it is to work within the community, both with neighbors and customers, and with the City government. 4) Recently, I spear-headed a successful neighborhood action to have the speed bumps on Plaza reinstalled, a development that has proved effective in restoring the residential ambience of one of Atlantic Beach's oldest neighborhoods. By clearly defining the goal and asking for their help, I think I effectively encouraged many residents to actively participate in the process. • 5)My family moved to the Beaches area in 1954. I went to San Pablo Elementary School, the"old"Fletcher, now FMS, and the "new"Fletcher, FHS, graduating in 1967. My husband and I returned to Atlantic Beach, after college*** and living abroad, in 1983. There is much discussion today about the character of Old Atlantic Beach. I have seen many changes in Atlantic Beach since the days when much of it was"forest primeval" and nobody locked their doors. Now that I am retired from teaching, I would like to be able to share my experience and perspective to develop and preserve the vibrant, healthy, inclusive community that is Atlantic Beach today. I think I know how to listen, to distill and focus issues, and my goal is always to develop a"win-win" solution. I have a particular personal interest in the effect architecture and city planning have on quality of life issues, which is why I would like to serve on the Community Development Board of Atlantic Beach. -2 - *Teaching experience: I was Administrative Assistant to the Headmaster of Ahlman Academy, Kabul, Afghanistan 1969-70. I taught kindergarten and elementary grades at The International School of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 1972-73,the Anglo- American School of Sofia, Bulgaria 1973-80, and the Dow(Chemical Company) School, Malinska, Yugoslavia(now Croatia) 1980-83. I taught mathematics at Mayport Middle • School 1983-87. The last seventeen years of my teaching career were at The Bolles School, where I taught algebra and AP statistics and was a Grade 11 advisor. Variously and collectively at these schools, I actively participated outside the classroom in administrative decisions, community relations, and on academic committees. ** On the Boulevard was the first gourmet foods, wine, cheese, catering business at the Beach. I started the business in one of the units of the commercial building (now Radio Shack)that my husband and I renovated. I sold the business after one year,to Betty James. ***My AB degree, cum laude, in Psychology and Education is from Randolph- Macon Woman's College 1971, and I have an MAT degree, in mathematics, from JU 1990.
