Atlantic Beach History 2000 Committee
804 East Coast Drive
Atlantic Beach, FL 32233
Dear Joanna:
Thank you for your report to the City Commission on behalf of the Atlantic Beach History 2000
Committee on Monday, January 24, 2000. This letter will confirm our understanding of the
agreements made between the committee and the City Commission at that meeting.
• The committee will produce 1,000 hard -back Atlantic Beach History books,
approximately 8 '/2 x 11 inches; mostly black and white, but with some 4 -color pictures;
the committee has one estimate of $14,745 for printing1,000 books.
• Most of the initial $6,000 is still in tact and these funds will be used to purchase
photographs from the Beaches Area Historic Society, and to pay for the services for a
graphic designer.
• The City Commission has expressed their support for the project and has authorized
expenditure of additional funds up to $15,000 to cover the cost of printing, and this
money will be refunded to the city through the sale of books, which the committee has
suggested selling for $25.00 each
• Profits from the sale of the books will be deposited in the city's general fund to be used in
a manner to be determined later
• The publication will be bid through the city in accordance with established purchasing
procedures, unless the City Commission waives the formal purchasing requirements
• A draft of the book will be presented to the City Commission in the spring for final
approval before going out to bid
• The City will be able to store and sell the books as you requested, and other details can be
worked out with the City Manager.
If you have any questions regarding this project, please contact City Manager, Jim Hanson, at
247 -5808.
Sincerely,
t 4 , 601/4 L

Re: COMBAT TEAM CAM •
Atlantic Beach, Florida i ' r 5•
1942 -1945
Dear Mayor Shaughnessy and Commissioners:
One of our members, Russell J. Pardee, an Atlantic Beach resident, has
researched the above captioned former military post and has summarized
his findings in the enclosed report, "Military Operations at the Beaches
nuring World War II ". Also enclosed is an aerial photo of the camp taken
in August, 1943 at which time Pardee was stationed there in "A" Battery of
The 53rd Coast Artillery Regiment.
We believe the City of Atlantic Beach might wish to consider placing a
commemorative marker on Plaza to show the location of the camp and thus
preserve the historical significance of the area. With that in mind, there
is also enclosed a project map of the camp area as furnished by the Army
Corps of Engineers.
Mr. Pardee will be away during the summer, but any questions you may have
can be directed to our Archivist Dwight Wilson, at our Archives, 241 -5657.
For your information, we are also making a request of the City of Jack-
sonville to establish a similar commemorative marker at the site of the
gun position in Area 7 in Hanna Park.
Sincerely,
Michael Paschall, President

Dear Secretary Mortham:
I am writing to express my support for the Atlantic Beach History 2000 Committee's
request for a matching grant from the Bureau of Historic Preservation's Community Education
Projects.
The importance of documenting and preserving the history of Atlantic Beach is key to
building a strong and prosperous community. This group has been diligent in documenting the
comprehensive history of the Atlantic Beach area. A bound book will be produced chronicling
these findings for the future. These efforts are applauded and greatly valued by the City of
Jacksonville as a neighboring city. Please consider funding to support this great effort to
preserve the history of Florida's northeast coast.
If any additional information is needed, please call myself or my staff.
Sincerely,
