Page 2 of 15 i?rurlamatinnof the Qllityof éltlantir J?earh in Recognition of National Gun Violence Awareness Day WHEREAS,every day,more than 100 Americans are killed by gun violence,alongside more than 230 Americanswho are shot and wounded,and on average there are more than 13,000gun homicidesevery year;and WHEREAS,Americansare 25 times more likelyto die by gun homicidethan people inother wealthy countries; and WHEREAS,Florida experienced2,868 gun deaths in 2019,with a rate of 12.8 deathsper 100,000people;and,in Florida,?rearm deaths are thesecond—leadingcause of deathfor childrenandteens;and WHEREAS,gun homicidesand assaultsare concentrated in cities,with more than half of all ?rearm-related gundeathsinthenationoccurringin127cities,and Duval County has a rate of 20.7 deaths per 100,000people;and WHEREAS,we know gun violencehits hard in Jacksonville,but it also hitsclose to home.Maurice Hobbswas one victim of gun violence with connections to Atlantic Beach.He was killed in Jacksonville in January 2017, days after his 18th birthday.He grew up inAtlantic Beach,spendingcountlesshours at the beachwith his toes in the sand,building castles,and jumping waves,and he isdeeply missed by his loving family and friends.Thoseaffectedbygunviolence,like Maurice'smother Latasha,will not be silenced,and itis ?tting that we acknowledge their human losses and take action to make our communities safer;and WHEREAS,cities across the nation,including in Jacksonville,are working to end the senseless violence with evidence-basedsolutions;and WHEREAS,support for the Second Amendmentrights of law-abidingcitizens goes hand-in-handwith keeping guns away from peoplewithdangerous histories;and WHEREAS,mayors and law enforcement officers know their communitiesbest,are the most familiar with localcriminalactivityandhowtoaddressit,and are best positioned to understandhow to keeptheircitizens safe;and WHEREAS,gun violence prevention is more important than ever as the COVID—l9pandemic resulted inincreasedgunsales,increased calls to suicide and domestic violence hotlines,and an increase in city gunviolence;and WHEREAS,in January 2013,Hadiya Pendletonwas tragicallyshot and killedat age 15;and on June 4,2021,to recognize what would have been Hadiya’s 24th binhday,people across the United States will recognize NationalGunViolenceAwarenessDayandwearorangeintributeto(1)Hadiya Pendleton and other victims of gunviolence;and (2)the loved ones of those victims;and WHEREAS,the ideawas inspiredby a group of Hadiya’s friends,who asked their classmates to commemorate her life by wearing orange;they chose this color because hunters wear orange to announce themselves to otherhunterswhenoutinthewoodsandorangeisacolorthatsymbolizesthevalueofhumanlife;and WHEREAS,anyone can join this campaign by pledging to wear orange on June 3,the first Friday in June 2022 I to help raise awareness about gun violence;and WHEREAS we renew our commitmentto reduce gun violenceand pledge to do all we can withinthe parameters allowed by Federal and Florida law to keep firearms out of the wrong hands and encourage responsible gunownershiptohelpkeepourcommunitiesandchildrensafe.
