1.FBC-R302.5.1: Openings from a private garage directly into a
room used for sleeping purposes shall not be permitted.
Other openings between the garage and residence shall be
equipped with solid wood doors not less than 13/8 inches
(35 mm) in thickness, solid or honeycombcore steel doors
not less than 13/8 inches (35 mm) thick, or 20-minute fire-
rated doors.
2.FBC-R302.5.2: Ducts in the garage and ducts penetrating the
walls or ceilings separating the dwelling from the garage
shall be constructed of a minimum No. 26 gage (0.48 mm)
sheet steel, 1 inch (25.4 mm) minimum rigid nonmetallic
Class 0 or Class 1 duct board, or other approved material and
shall not have openings into the garage.
3.FBC-R302.6: The garage shall be separated as required
by Table R302.6. Openings in garage walls shall comply
with Section R302.5. Attachment of gypsum board shall
comply with Table R702.3.5. The wall separation provisions
of Table R302.6 shall not apply to garage walls that are
perpendicular to the adjacent dwelling unit wall.
4. FBC-R, M1307.2: Appliances designed to be fixed in position
shall be fastened or anchored in an approved manner. In Seismic
Design Categories D0, D1 and D2, and in townhouses in
Seismic Design Category C, water heaters and thermal storage
units shall be anchored or strapped to resist horizontal
displacement caused by earthquake motion in accordance with
one of the following:
1.Anchorage and strapping shall be designed to resist a
horizontal force equal to one-third of the operating weight
of the water heater storage tank, acting in any horizontal
direction. Strapping shall be at points within the upper one-
third and lover one-third of the applianceʼs vertical
dimensions. At the lower point, the strapping shall maintain
a minimum distance of 4 inches (102 mm) above the
controls.
2.The anchorage strapping shall be in accordance with the
appliance manufacturerʼs recommendations.
5. FBC-R, M1305.1.1: Furnaces and air handlers within
compartments or alcoves shall have a minimum working space
clearance of 3 inches (76 mm) along the sides, back and top
with a total width of the enclosing space being not less than 12
inches (305 mm) wider than the furnace or air handler. Furnaces
having a firebox open to the atmosphere shall have not less
than a 6-inch (152 mm) working space along the front
combustion chamber side. Combustion air openings at the rear
or side of the compartment shall comply with the requirements
of Chapter 17.

R311.7.5 Riser height. The riser height shall be
not more than 73/4 inches (196 mm). The riser
shall be measured vertically between leadingedges of the adjacent treads. The greatest riser
height within any flight of stairs shall notexceed the smallest by more than 3/8 inch (9.5
mm). Risers shall be vertical or sloped from the
underside of the nosing of the tread above at anangle not more than 30 degrees (0.51 rad) from
the vertical. Open risers are permitted providedthat the openings located more than 30 inches
(762 mm), as measured vertically, to the floor orgrade below do not permit the passage of a 4-
inch-diameter (102 mm) sphere.
R311.7.5.2 Tread depth. The tread depth shall be not less than 10
inches (254 mm). The tread depth shall be measured horizontally
between the vertical planes of the foremost projection of adjacenttreads and at a right angle to the treadʼs leading edge. The
greatest tread depth within any flight of stairs shall not exceed thesmallest by more than 3/8 inch (9.5 mm).
R311.7.1 Width. Stairways shall be not less than 36 inches (914 mm) in clear width at all points above the permitted handrail height and below the
required headroom height. The clear width of the stairway at and below the handrail height, including treads and landings, shall be not less than
311/2 inches (787 mm) where a handrail is installed on one side and 27 inches (698 mm) where handrails are provided on both sides.
