I have a BBA in Finance and an MBA Marketing. I have 15
years experience in the corporate sector working in the
capacities of VP of Marketing for a Real Estate Developer and
Credit Union, as well as CEO of a Credit Union and Law Firm.
Currently, I am Broker/Owner of Coastal Homes Realty and
have been practicing real estate in the Jacksonville area for
over 20 years.
In regard to the environment, I served as President of The
Please provide a brief
explanation of your
interest and your reasons
for wishing to be
appointed to this
board/committee.
Woods Community Garden Club for 2 years and was
instrumental in bringing in environmental experts for seminars
and encouraging the planting of big canopy trees by the
community. I am also a past member of the Ribault Garden
Club, where I served as Chapter President and consulted with
local nurseries and garden centers to encourage growing and
selling native milkweed to assist with the plight of the Monarch
Butterflies. I have also taken environmental classes through the
OF/IFAS Extension Duval County to identify, protect and
preserve our natural habitat; specifically involving Plants, Birds,
Monarch Butterflies and Honey Bees. I have also participated
in a review by a team of Master Gardeners from the Extension
to review my yard and make suggestions to minimize my
footprint and maximize support for the environment. I instituted
every suggestion they made.
I have been an environmentalist all my life. It started with my
upbringing, where my mother instilled Native American beliefs
and a reverence for nature. I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit,
Michigan, basically a concrete community with little nature left.
I moved to Jacksonville over 20 years ago, and moved to
Atlantic Beach 13 years ago, fulfilling a life long dream to live in
a beautiful, natural community.
My property lies adjacent to a small tidal creek off the
Intracoastal. I have seen the water rise over the years I have
lived here. The shore lines are eroding and big beautiful trees
are falling over due to erosion from periodic flooding.
The creek I live on was once loaded with garbage and debris,
was told, from dumping years ago by the Navy. In any event,
my neighbor and I have taken it upon ourselves to clean up our
creek. This was no small endeavor, and took us months to
achieve. We pulled out old tires, mattresses, car parts,
carpeting...you name it! Now, the creek is clean, but the trees
are falling over and that is a big problem. We need our big
canopy trees! And, if we don't figure something out about the
erosion coming from the Intracoastal side of Atlantic Beach, as
well as the Ocean side, there won't be an Atlantic Beach left.
This year the storm surge caused the water in my little creek to
come up far higher in my backyard then ever before. It came all
the way up to my bottom step. A good 20 feet farther into my
yard and a good foot higher in elevation then ever before.
Thank God it did not rain too much during that Hurricane, or me
and many of my neighbors would have flooded.
I would like to join the Environmental Stewardship Committee
2
to be a constructive and active part of developing the solutions
that we need to implement to preserve, protect and nurture our
beautiful and unique natural environment. Thank you for the
opportunity to apply for this position. I would consider it an
honor to serve on the committee.
PLEASE NOTE: This application will expire two (2) years from the date of submittal.
