Hello Mr. Hanson,
The following is my report regarding the health status of the two trees I recently examined.
Tree 1 is a 10” DBH (diameter at breast height) hybrid oak. The tree is a cross between a Laurel
Oak (Quercus laurifolia) and a Water Oak (Quercus nigra). Not only is this tree essentially a
weed, but the base is completely hollow, making it unsafe. Due to its proximity to the driveway,
located midpoint south right next to the driveway, this tree should be removed as soon as is
feasible. Given the tree’s poor prognosis, removal is the only practical means of mitigating the
threat to life and limb posed by this tree to anything less than a moderate level.
Tree 2 is an 18” DBH Laurel Oak (Quercus laurifolia) adjacent to midpoint east next to the
driveway. The tree has a split top crotch that is structurally unstable, and the tree’s base is
completely hollow. In addition, there are insect borers present with visible frass (residue
signifying insect incursion into trunk) and degenerative fungi present. This tree is a hazard to
life, limb, and property and should be removed as soon as possible. As with the tree above, this
tree’s poor prognosis leads me to conclude that removal is the only practical means of
mitigating the threat to life and limb it currently poses to anything less than a moderate level.
Respectfully,
Thomas A. Selvig
