Resolution No. 00-02 v ill RESOLUTION NO. 00-02 WHEREAS, Jacksonville Beach Elementary School has served the Beaches communities since it was constructed in 1928; and WHEREAS, the Jacksonville Beach Elementary School now serves as a successful magnet school for almost 600 gifted and academically talented students; and WHEREAS, the Duval County School Board has proposed building a new school west of the existing structure; and WHEREAS, the original four-room structure served as the first African-American school in the beaches area; and WHEREAS, Beaches African-American Centennial Committee, parents, the Parent- Teachers Association, and local citizens desire that the original structure be preserved and used as a museum to preserve and protect the community's African-American history and other historic memorabilia, and have designated that the week of March 17, 2000 as Jacksonville Beach Elementary Preservation Celebration Week. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the City Commission of the City of Atlantic Beach supports the efforts of the Beaches African-American Centennial Committee and petitions fbi the Duval County School Board to preserve the original four-room structure of Jacksonville Beach Elementary School.
