Resolution No. 24-21RESOLUTION NO. 24-21
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
ATLANTIC BEACH, FLORIDA, REQUESTING THAT THE DUVAL
COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD TAKES ACTION TO ENSURE THAT
ATLANTIC BEACH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CONTINUES TO
OPERATE AS THE COMMUNITY'S ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND IS
NOT SUBJECT TO CLOSURE; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS; AND
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, since 1939, Atlantic Beach Elementary School has played a vital role in
shaping the community's character and well-being by nurturing young minds, educating future
leaders and citizens, fostering a sense of belonging, and serving as a hub for social connections
and resources; and
WHEREAS, while the historically significant structure at 298 Sherry Drive's most
notable physical feature is its charming pink exterior with blue trim, the vibrant "Little Pink
School" is a community cornerstone with immeasurable value to the community, having
served generations of families; and
WHEREAS, Atlantic Beach Elementary School maintains an A rating and is in the
among Florida's top-ranked schools, providing the optimal environment for its students
because of the unified support of parents, teachers, staff, administrators, business
supporters, local government, nonprofits, and many others; and
WHEREAS, highly rated elementary schools enhance quality of life in communities and
contribute to the economic well-being of their residents because they tend to be more attractive to
families, leading to increased property values, a stronger tax base, and a more vibrant overall
community. By investing in their schools, communities invest in their own futures; and
WHEREAS, the Duval County School Board is evaluating the merits of a facilities
consolidation plan that would close Atlantic Beach Elementary School, which be a tremendous
detriment to the Atlantic Beach community.
NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved by the City Commission of the City of Atlantic
Beach, Florida:
SECTION 1. That the City Commission respectfully requests that the Duval County
School Board takes action to ensure that Atlantic Beach Elementary School continues to operate

SECTION 2. That all resolutions or parts of resolutions in conflict with this Resolution
are repealed to the extent of such conflict.
SECTION 3. That this Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its passage and
