WHEREAS, on the late afternoon of February 26, 1987, the Fernpassat, a
Norwegian-owned vessel with a cargo of German automobiles for the port of
Jacksonville, attempted to enter Mayport Harbor, and
WHEREAS, due to strong northeast winds and the lack of a pilot, the ship
struck the rocks entering the jetties, penetrating one of the diesel fuel
tanks, and
WHEREAS, the resultant was the dumping of almost three hundred thousand
gallons of fuel oil along the beaches of North Atlantic Beach, and
WHEREAS, many of the area sea birds such as pelicans, seagulls, and
loons were coated with oil and in danger of losing their lives, and
WHEREAS, CYNTHIA MOSLING, of Bird Emergency Aid Kare Sanctuary, BEAKS,
organized her group of volunteers to assist in the succor and rescue of these
ocean foul, and
WHEREAS, hundreds of these birds might have otherwise died,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
ATLANTIC BEACH, FLORIDA:
1. That CYNTHIA MOSLING and the BEAKS Organization be and they hereby
are extended the grateful thanks and appreciation of the residents
and citizens of the City of Atlantic Beach.
2. That a certified copy of this Resolution be spread upon the offi-
cial minutes of the City of Atlantic Beach, with copies forwarded
to the Legislative Delegation of neighboring communities and the
Local and State headquarters of the animal rescue leagues engaged
in similar work throughout the country.
ADOPTED UNANIMOUSLY by the City Commission of the City of Atlantic
Beach, Florida, this 13th day of April, 1987.
