N. VanderWal, Acting Chief of Police FROM: Sgt. Smith, Day Watch Supervisor SUBJECT: Letter of Commendation Lt. VanderWal: On August 6, 1983 at approximately 8: 30AM, Officer Hall responded to a call of "someone calling for help" at 434 Mako Drive, Atlantic Beach. Officer Hall found Ms. Linda Alaras suffering from a severe electrical shock. Ms. Alaras was in her home alone when she noticed a water leak on her concrete patio. As she went to investigate, she observed an extension cord laying in the water. She reached down to pick up the cord which had the insulation chewed off by her dog, and received the shock. She was knocked off her feet by the jolt and was then laying in the water unable to release the extension cord which by this time was burning the skin across the inside of her hand. Ms. Alaras was able to yell.-for help, which was heard by her 15 year old neighbor, Kevin Sitson of 442 Mako Drive. Kevin ran over and quickly unplugged the extension cord. Ms. Alaras, who had just recently been released from the hospital, had lost all feeling in both arms, suffered third degree burns on her hands but otherwise : as all right. Rescue treated her at the scene then she was transported to Beaches to have her back checked. Officer Hall feels that Kevin Sitson prevented Ms. Alaras from being shocked to death. We would recommend that the Department write Kevin a letter commending him for his quick action and thanking him on behalf of the Department and the Community for coming to the aid of his neighbor.
