Resolution No. 05-15RESOLUTION OS-15
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH, DESIGNATING
CONIFEROUS TREES ADORNED WITH LIGHTS, DECORATIONS AND
STARS AS "CHRISTMAS TREES"
The City Commission of Atlantic Beach, Florida, in regular meeting duly assembled on
Monday, December 12, 2005, resolves as follows:
WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of the City Commission that coniferous trees
decorated with lights, ornaments and stars on City property have been referred to as "Holiday
Trees"; and
WHEREAS, coniferous trees adorned with lights, decorations and stars have been popularly
associated with the celebration of Christmas since the 16a' Century; and
WHEREAS, the City of Atlantic Beach is inclusive to all religions and customs and the City
respects all religious and cultural traditions equally. The use of the term "Holiday Tree" is denigratory
of the customs of those celebrating Christmas; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission recognizes that the use of the term "Holiday Tree" is an
attempt to be inclusive of all persons of whatever creed or custom and further recognizes that those
using the term have their hearts in the right place, but go too far in the name of political correctness;
and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Commission of the City of Atlantic
Beach do hereby direct staff to refer to trees adomed with lights, decorations and stars as Christmas
Trees from this point forward.
Be it further resolved that all reference to "Holiday Tree" be replaced with the term
"Christmas Tree" in any City literature.
Be it further resolved that the City Commission uses this time of year to wish everyone a
Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Joyous Kwanza, and joins with those celebrating Eid-al-Adha in
remembering the less fortunate.
RESOLVED AND DONE, this 12a' day of December, 2005 by the City Commission of
Atlantic Beach.
