J.B. Claiborne , Commissioner
The meeting was called to order by the chairman, Mr . Stynchcomb.
Minutes of the last meeting were read.
Mr. William S. Compton, representing the Penecostal Holiness Church, presented plans
of the Ehurch they plan to build on Main Street between 14th Street and Levy Road, in
Atlantic Beach. Since the plans did not comply with the existing building ordinance
the Board asked that he revise his plans so they would stay within the ordinance and
present them at A later date for approval.
Mr. Tom Ellis, representing Mr. John Blow, of the Interstate Contracting Comnany,
presented a program regarding the development of Royal Palms Shonning Center, located
on Atlantic Boulevard between Royal Palms Drive and Sailfish Drive East. Mr. Ellis,
stated that Pic and Save, had agreed to lease 3200 feet of floor space. The k & P
Tea Comnany, he was negotiating with for 1400 feet, and that he has an incuiry from
Sears Roebuck, for a catalog store. Mr. Ellis, stated that in order to get this
program going he would like to have a service station permit for the Humble Oil
Company, who authorized him to ask for the permit.
The Board feels from the standpoint of the city it would be foolish to consider
another service station since we have two facing Atlantic Boulevard, and one has been
vacant for months. Also, this recuest would recuire a change of the zoning ordinance.
We also feel a. traffic hazard would result from too many entrances. The stores
naturally look for as many entrances and exits as they can get, but from the city
standpoint we feel it would cause a traffic hazard and therefore not to the best
interest of the city. The Board unanimously agree the Shopping Center is beneficial
to the residents of Atlantic Beach, but will defer action on the service station
request until a later date.
The entrance to the Aquatic Pool , was discussed and the Board feels it is dangerous
for the children to enter and leave from Atlantic Boulevard. Another entrance will be
studied and presented at a later date.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned.
